Official Redcar RUFC
U17s at Durham
Durham City U17s v Redcar U 17s April 3rd.2005

With the non appearance of three players, and the withdrawal of two more through illness, Redcar were forced to begin the game against a strong Durham side with only fourteen men, as the home team were unwilling to make the sides equal.

Kicking off in bright sunshine Redcar carried the game to their opponents in the early stages, and were rewarded when Liam Rogers converted a 35metre penalty in the fifth minute to give them a surprise lead.

Unfortunately this served as a wake up call for Durham who soon realized that the extra man gave them a distinct advantage, using the overlap to score four tries in the next 20 minutes, although it must be said, two of these were down to debatable decisions by the referee.

As the home team sat back on their lead, Redcar got back in to the match, but despite spending most of the last ten minutes of the half camped in the home teams 22, they were unable to turn possession into points.

Half Time; Durham 22 Redcar 3

To compound Redcars problems they lost Lee Ditchburn with an ankle injury at the end of the half, and had to play the second period two men short, as there was still no offer of a replacement by the hosts.

Straight from the kick off Durham increased the lead with another converted try. Eight minutes in, Redcar won a line out on the Durham 10m line, the ball went back to Andrew Wills, who in his inimitable manner, forced his way through the defence before releasing the ball to Mark Ellis, who dived over the line for the only
Redcar try of the match, Liam Rogers added the extras.

That proved to be the last we saw of Redcar as an attacking force, as they valiantly strove to keep the fifteen men of Durham at bay. This proved to be an impossible task, and the home team ran in five more tries without reply to run out victors by 59 points to ten.

Congratulations to the 14 who turned out today, following a shaky start you competed all morning, but against a team of the calibre of Durham a turn out of 18 or 19 is needed.

Let’s see everyone at training on Thursday, and finish the season on a positive note!
