U17s at Mowden Park
Mowden Park U17s v Redcar U17s Mar.13th.2005

Redcar traveled to Darlington Mowden Park hoping to avenge three previous defeats inflicted by the home team in two seasons of meetings.

Redcar kicked off in bright sunshine on a near perfect playing surface, and the early exchanges were even with neither side able to dominate. Redcar gradually settled in to the game, and after ten minutes, powerful surges by Dave Brown and Mark Ellis freed Dave Windsor who beat two defenders before crossing the line, only to be held up by a good last ditch tackle by the Mowden defence.

This chance shook the home team who showed more urgency as the game developed in to a tight battle of the forwards, with both sides trying to force the error which would break the deadlock. Mowden looked dangerous when they got the ball to their No.13, but the Redcar backs were equal to the challenge with some excellent tackling from Kev Hartley and Richie Young.

The breakthrough came after twenty minutes play, Mowden were awarded a penalty on the Redcar 10m line following an infringement in a scrum, this was quickly taken, and the opening try resulted. The attempted conversion failed.

Redcar were convinced they had equalized five minutes later when Mark Ellis touched down, but the unsighted referee judged he had been held up. This spurred Redcar on to greater effort, and after thirty minutes Michael Tucker drove over for a well deserved try, Richie Young added the extras to put the visitors in front.

Unfortunately the lead was short lived, as three minutes later possession was lost in a scrum, and two missed tackles allowed the home team to retake the lead with a try under the posts, which was duly converted to give them a 12-7 half time lead.

Mowden started the second period with a long kick in to the corner to put Redcar under immediate pressure, but the defence kept them at bay and after an uncomfortable opening spell for the visitors they gradually began to take control of the game, slowly but surely grinding the home team down. Mowden brought on several replacements to try to get back in the ascendancy, but Redcar confidence was growing by the minute as they won more and more possession, getting some good balls to the backs but never managing the final break to the line.

With 27mins. on the clock and Redcar camped in the Mowden half for long periods, man of the match Michael Tucker powered over the line for his second try of the match to level the scores, Richie Young’s kick from wide on the right, fell inches short of the bar, to leave the scores level.

In a hard fought last ten minutes, both sides worked hard to grab a winner, with Redcar again gaining the most territorial advantage, but having to settle for a draw at the final whistle.

This was a hard fought competitive game between two evenly matched teams who were a credit to their respective clubs, playing the game in a hard, aggressive fair manner, and once again providing excitement and entertainment for spectators.
