Ponteland U17s v Redcar U17s Feb.27th.2005
With all senior matches falling foul of the weather, it was left to the under 17 team to fly the flag for Redcar at the weekend with a tricky trip to Ponteland, a team who had handed out a 40-13 defeat in the fixture at McKinlay Park.
Once again Redcar traveled with a squad of only fifteen players, two of whom played courtesy of a late phone call.
Redcar kicked off on a heavy pitch, with weather conditions almost perfect, and the game soon developed in to a hard fought contest with neither side able to break the opposition and develop any meaningful attacking play. With thirteen minutes on the clock, Ponteland won possession from a scrum wide on the Redcar 22, quickly passing the ball along the backs to score in the opposite corner, despite a last ditch tackle on the line. That proved to be the only score of the first half, Redcar defending well to deny the home team any more scoring chances, and denying themselves the chance of an equalizer with an infringement in the scoring area when a try seemed inevitable. Ponteland failed with an attempted penalty kick on the stroke of half time to leave the shoreline 5-0 at the break.
Encouraged by the home teams inability to break through their defence, Redcar lined up for the second half confident of turning the game round.
Unfortunately Ponteland capitalised on a mistake by the Redcar backs to increase their lead after two minutes, scoring a try under the posts which was easily converted. Earlier in the season this would have signaled a collapse by Redcar, but they have developed resilience in recent weeks, and denied the home team any more scoring opportunities until ten minutes from time when another simple mistake led to Ponteland crossing for their third try, which was again converted. This was quickly followed by a well taken drop goal to effectively put the match beyond the reach of Redcar.
To their credit Redcar did not let their heads drop, and continued working hard, gaining reward for their endeavours when Michael Tucker held on to the ball, while his supporting forwards drove the maul over the line, before releasing for man of the match, Silla, to score in the corner with the final play of the game, making the final score a respectable Ponteland 22 Redcar 5.
This game was never a classic with flowing rugby at a premium, but on the heavy pitch that was never going to be the case, and when Redcar cut out the basic mistakes they will get the results their efforts deserve.
