Hartlepool Rovers U17s v Redcar U17s Feb.6th.2005
After last weeks disappointing performance the Redcar coaches were looking for an improved display in the eagerly awaited clash with Hartlepool Rovers.
Player unavailability forced Redcar to start the game with regular Prop Michael Tucker at Fly Half, with Alex Haralabidis returning at Prop.
The opening exchanges were played out in the Redcar half without Rovers really threatening the defence, until the No.8 picked up a loose ball on the 22 after 7 mins. Evading all attempted tackles to score a fine individual try, the same player converting with a difficult kick from near the touchline.
Redcar did not let this setback upset them, and enjoyed most of the possession in the middle of the park, but were unable to work the breakthrough there play deserved.
They suffered a blow after 22mins. when Haralabidis had to leave the field with a recurrence of his shoulder injury. Anthony Wright came on for his first game back following a long injury, with Tucker returning to Prop, Kev Hartley moving to Fly Half, Dave Hockney to Scrum Half, and Wright in the back row.
Rovers took advantage of the disruption in the Redcar team scoring their second try after 25mins. before Redcar had time to settle.
Redcar fought back again, and were rewarded when Tucker kicked a penalty on the stroke of half time to make the score12-3 to the home team.
The half time pep talk by coaches Willa and Pudsey worked wonders for the team, and they began to react quicker to the loose ball, putting the home team under pressure, and looking as though they finally believed in themselves.
15mins. in to the second period, Rovers won a line out on the Redcar 5m. line, driving over for their third try, which was converted.
Redcar seemed to go to sleep for 5mins. after this score, and the alert Rovers attack took advantage with two quick tries, which were both converted.
With the score at 33-3, and 15mins. remaining on the clock, another humiliating scoreline was on the cards, but Redcar dug deep to claw their way back in to the match, and once again began to put the home team under pressure with some powerful forward play, slowly but surely working their way up the pitch, and almost camping inside the Rovers 10m line for the final 5 mins.
Following several attempts to work the ball through from short penalty taps, Redcar got the try they deserved, winning the ball from a 5m. scrum, Mark Ellis powered through to score in the dying seconds, with Tucker adding the extras for a full time score of Hartlepool Rovers 33 Redcar 10.
This was a much improved display, with the whole team playing their part in a display to please the coaches, and prove to themselves that when the attitude is right, the performance is good.
Dave Hockney played his best match of the season, slotting in well as emergency scrum half, and it was heartening to see Anthony (Nadger) Wright back on the field, but the Man of the Match award was given, after much deliberation, to Michael Tucker.
