Official Redcar RUFC
U17s vs Gateshead
By DW - January 13 2005
Despite having a map and directions the U17s still managed to get lost as they travelled North to Gateshead leaving them very little time to prepare for what should have been a good match.... (Of course it does help if you hold the map the right way up, doesn't it Mr Brown and Mr Williams!!!!!) >
Gateshead U17s v Redcar U17s Dec.12th.2004

Following an unscheduled two-week break, Redcar traveled to Gateshead looking for a good performance to kick start their season.

In near perfect conditions the early exchanges were even, but Gateshead got the break on 7 mins. When Redcar lost possession in the line out and some slick passing across the backs resulted in the opening try being scored in the corner.

The game remained even with Redcar defending well, and Gateshead never looking comfortable, until the 30th. Min. when they broke away to double the lead.

Redcar took the game straight back to the home team, stealing a line out on the defences 10-metre line, and Andrew Wills sprinted through the defence to reduce the arrears, and give his team hope.

Unfortunately a couple of mistakes led to Gateshead pressure, and they broke from a 5-metre scrum to restore their ten-point advantage at the break.

Redcars customary lack of concentration appeared at the start of the second period, resulting in the home team, cheered on by a large, noisy crowd, increasing their lead by four tries in a hectic 15 min. spell, during which Redcar also managed another score, Mark Ellis crashing over, after a strong run through by Richie Evans.
Gateshead made full use of their large squad, giving several fresh legs a run out in this period, and with Redcar once again only travelling with fifteen fit men, they did well to restrict the home team to two more tries in the final 20 mins.
Final Score Gateshead 53 v 10 Redcar.

Once again Redcar gained plaudits from the referee, and home supporters, for their attitude to the game, and undoubted individual skills. Having said that they must stop giving the ball away cheaply, after working hard to win it, and must remain switched on for the full 80 minutes, if they want to get results from games like this which they could, and should have won.
