Redcar v Westoe and Barnard Castle – 14/11/2004
Under 12s
Redcar started off against a very big Westoe team and from the off were under the cosh with Westoe scoring a very early try and with the conversion took the lead 0-7. It looked a bit ominous for the Redcar lads but they weren’t phased by Westoe’s size and aggression and matched what they threw at them. There were some great tackles produced to take possession of the ball and return the score with a try from Craig Newlands, who also converted to level the scores at 7-7. Redcar nearly came close with 2 more chances but at the interval the scores were level. There was some excellent scrummaging from the 2 props Callum Walker and Perry Goodwin which allowed a few to be taken against the head.
With a lot of changes to the Redcar team because of the large squad currently at the club Redcar carried on where they left off and another try and conversion was scored by Craig to lead 14-7. Westoe were never out of the game and kept looking for an equaliser. With Redcar enjoying a lot of possession a lack of concentration aloud Westoe to find the equaliser they were after, and with the conversion, levelled the scores at 14-14. This seemed to fire Redcar up again and from a penalty, kicked deep into the Westoe half, Robert Froom ran the length of the pitch to beat a Westoe player to the ball and score. But the try wasn’t given and at the final whistle the scores were 14-14, a fair result for a hard fought game.
Apologies go the lads in the squad who were waiting for their chance against Barnard Castle but when the game against Westoe had finished Barnard Castle were nowhere to be found.
