Redcar v Whitby

This was Redcars first match of the season with a newly formed team that have trained together throughout the summer.
Whitby kicked off and the Redcar forwards of Mitch, Callum Walker, Tom Cox, David Marshall and James Wooley took the game to Whitby with powerful drives presenting the ball for the next forward to take it on again and again. This continued until the ball was taken to ground then the impressive new partnership of Luke Edwardson (Scrum half) and Craig Newlands (Fly half) took over. The game was then opened up bringing the rest of the Redcar backs of Josh Caddy, Perry Goodwin, Andrew Little, Robert Froom and Jay Bowie into the game. This was the way the game continued throughout with Whitby counterattacking with some breakaway tries due to the odd bit of loose play by Redcar.
At half time there was a change around with Callum Jowsey, Harry Challinor, Mark Steventon, Daniel Gaffney, Michael Wright, coming on for Redcar. Ryan O’Connor unselfishly played the full game for Whitby and Michael Lee, Michael Wright, Mark Steventon and another played half a game.
Redcar took an early lead 14-0 but Whitby never gave up and kept pegging the score back slightly, the final score was 42-29 to Redcar with Craig Newlands converting all 6 tries. The try scorers were Craig Newlands 3 tries, Mitch 2 tries and Josh Caddy 1 try. The game was allowed to flow with some impressive open play by local referee Joe Walker.
All players played well and this was a very pleasing first match of the season for the Redcar coaches, Alan Dixon, Dave Rae and Peter Edwardson with more to come from the Redcar team.
