Remember When - Redcar RUFC
By HB - March 3 2005
Over the years some of the older members have been kind enough to entrust me with some Redcar RUFC memorabilia. As we celebrate our world cup winners triumphant return it seems fitting to remember our past and have a page on the website where we can share those memories of where we came from. >

Thanks to Hugh McCafferty for this latest archive footage of teams from yesteryear.

Redcar side v Marske 1985

Pirates 1982

Pirates 1983, yes Adrian Evans was that thin once

Thanks to Bob Cook for this latest batch if anyone has more send them this way....

A youthful Club Captain alongside the Captain of the Mariners, any many more well known players.

The ghostly figure of Cook at the rear...

Ian Hayton, Graeme Evans(Mohican) and Jim Butcher...

The Hartley Archive - Isle of Man 1995

The Isle of Man Tour Sunday Team with a few ringers!

My wifes a physio its only pain Dave.

Thanks to Iain Colquhoun for this photo and the Evening Gazette cutting

"Redcar Rugby Club is at present host to four members of a rugby club in the United States. The party is led by Keith (Percy) Branton a former skipper of Redcar in 1960-61, who later emigrated to America.

On a visit to his parents Keith has brought three players from the Erie RFC in Pennsylvania. The lads have been found places in the Redcar sides to give them experience of English Rugby and all three are playing in the A team which travelled to Wigton"

Pictured are, Chairman of Selectors Iain Colquhoun,  Percy Branton, Joe Iesue, Redcar Chairman Tommy Jackson, Redcar President  David Goodswen , Gary Maras and Joe Emerick.

At last the first chink in the Fred Hartley archive with a couple of photographs of the 1980 September tour. The photograph with players names is before the game with the next photograph taken after a famous win Hartley style 6pts to 3pts.

My thanks to Jon Griffiths for these priceless pictures of an early Redcar tour if you know all the names let me know via the message board and I will post them on this page.

The driver seems to be taking little notice of the road ahead.

In those days there were no toilets on board, on a long trip Stokesley was often the first stop.

50-0 to the Visitors but who was the opposition, I think the picture was taken before the game.

Name the players please.

Was Arthur Evans wearing a wig or was he really young and trendy.

The Bath 1951- Doug Smailes remembers.

Fred Hartley sits proudly with his team of 1977-78. Next to Fred is David Goodswen our late President. A young Geoff Smith front centre, what a talent, and a younger version of Iain Colquhoun and Barry Cowell as the bookends.

Ian Colquhoun has let me borrow his scrapbook of Redcar in the 70's. This is one of the pictures. Can you name all the players?

This photo supplied by Dave Pearson was a celebration. What I cant remember. Can you fill in the gaps?

The last game some of us played The Ancient Mariners on tour in Scotland.

The Geriatrics Remember

This picture appeared in the Evening Gazette ‘Remember When’ page on the 20th September 2003. A Mr Tate of Eaglescliffe had sent the picture to the paper It is signed in the bottom left corner by a Mr Taylor of Redcar who I assume took the photo. Doug Sivyer had spotted it and suggests that is an early Redcar RUFC team, circa 1932, the background to the picture being the racecourse, our former home. I managed to contact Mr Tate a former Headmaster (not in Redcar) who had found the photograph amongst some old school papers. He was kind enough to send me the original, which is published here. Doug Sivyer believes that the player 2nd right on the middle row may be Dr G.I. Mackinlay. The gent in the flat cap on the extreme right of the front row could be Jim Fletcher who later became chairman. 2nd right back row may be Alan Knutson and one of the gents on the left may be Dr Willie Mackinlay, Ian Mackinlay’s father and Nick Mackinlay’s grandfather. As you would expect I have sent a copy to Nick to see if he has any old photographs to compare this with. If you have any ideas let me know.

The teams that took part in the match to celebrate the opening of the squash courts at Mackinlay Park

I am old enough to remember this but what year was it?
