Bracks 33* Brax's fine captains innings sees his side home
By Gordy Shaw - June 3 2004
Clifton 3rds won the toss and elected to field 1st on a warm bank holiday Monday. After a fine start by the openers, Maurice Edwards and Steve Morley run through Clifton for 135. Hopes of an easy victory were short lived as this game turned out to be the most exciting match of the season so far ... >
HTCC seconds showed for the second time in one weekend that they have much to learn about run chases. A huge sigh of relief rang around the HTG when skipper Brax lofted the winning run to steer his side to a one wicket victory on Monday at home to Clifton. However the manner of winning left much to be desired.

Chasing a meagre 137 on a good batting track several batsman must re-examine the way they got out and put the pressure on those who followed them.

Clifton elected to bat and at 52-0 off 12 overs the home side were desperate for a breakthrough. Within a few overs though the guile of Mo Edwards had taken the first five wickets and Clifton looked as though they wouldn’t get much over a 100. Complacency set in for the home side. Some good shots saw the tail wag. A little apathy coupled with perhaps an over-abundance of obviously well meant advice to the Captain allowed the visitors probably 20 runs more than they should have got.

The hard working Edwards finished with 5-21 and Steve Morley 3-32.

No problem, thought the over confident home side, but very soon it was 15-3 and then 36-4. The game had changed but a good partnership between Ady Mann, 34, and in form Cross, 30, took the score into the 90’s and all assumed it would be plain sailing. Wrong. Skipper Brax then arrived and a very nervous period ensued as wickets fell and Clifton sensed victory. It became 102-8 and 127-9 before finally we squeezed home with the skipper unbeaten on 33.

Yes it was 22 more points but we all know this was a game which almost went wrong on us due to allowing extra runs to be scored by the opposition but more importantly poor shot selection and indisciplined batting by experienced batsmen in dealing with the straight, innocent looking, delivery.

The Captain got us out of a hole and deserves the plaudits in becoming this correspondents man of the match. Well batted skip.

Next Sunday is the test as we lie 40 points ahead of visitors Old Park who have two games in hand. Maybe it’s time to bat first again as we have shown that we are less than convincing batting second at this point in time.

There was much discussion and soul searching after the game. The selection committee sat and performances like the last two in the batting department would make it easy for the axe to fall. This may be overstating the case but it gives food for thought doesn’t it ?

Remain upbeat though. We are still unbeaten and every other club is playing catch up.
