Heanor 2nds beat Darley Abbey 3rds ...
By Gordy Shaw - June 2 2004
Looking to keep the pressure on Old Park, Heanor 2nds travelled to Darley Abbey 3rd team at Parkers Piece which by reputation is a very lively pitch. Luckily Brackenbury won the toss and put the opposition in ... >
With the forecast for showers, shrewd, unbeaten skipper Bracks elected to see HTCC field first for the only time this season so far. He was advised strongly by his team as the wicket was green and damp. More than one ex-Stabbo lad was heard to mutter ‘this wicket makes Stabbo look like paradise’.
At about 40-0 the sometime erratic Big Bird and the sometimes erotic Keg were ready for a change. Actually Keg volunteered to come off as the nights before lager and the on the way to the ground samosas had finally caught up with him. Suddenly the game changed, Big Bird picked up two wickets and tight, miserly bowling by new youngster Frank Brown meant wickets started to tumble and the Heanor fielders closed in around the bat as a succession of juniors came in.
Things didn’t go all the visitors way though . Brax dropped his usual catch and Keg took the p**s. However, the worm turned and Keg dropped two of the easiest, simplest catches ever seen North of Lords and even Parko had to see the funny side.
Brown and new youth player Jimmy Wright turned the screw though and more wickets fell. Three in three balls in one Brown over, one was a run out, meant there was no way back for the Abbey who were all out for 96. Brown taking 4-14 off 14 and Cliff 3 wickets. The down side was young Richmond who went to the wrong ground and then locked himself out of his car and didn’t arrive early enough to be anything other than a fielder and umpire. Brax was aghast.
In reply strokemakers Parko and Keg, unbelievably opening the batting as well, decided to attack from ball one and suddenly we were 25-2 off 3 overs. The wicket was still playing tricks and Brax chewed his nails a bit more. Wright played properly as did Clifford but wickets still fell. Enter big Jason who, following on from last weeks 100, bludgeoned a quick 34 and victory was reached in 25 overs.
Another win in the bag but HTCC looked a bit shaky batting second. However the league table doesn’t lie and it’s Old Parks turn to meet the champions elect next weekend. This correspondents man of the match, Frank Brown, for bowling us into the game. Worst part of the game was the fall out from Cliffs visit to the bog just before 2pm. Come on the Town
