562 runs at 140.5 Brear smacks 4th ton in a row as Heanor go top
By Adam Harchuk - May 28 2004
Andy Brear strikes two undefeated centuries, Hessey brings cup victory for Heanor in successful chase, while Colin Taylor takes his 23rd wicket of the season with a 5 wicket haul in the cup match against Belper. The 2nds also continue their undefeated start ... >
Andy Brear continued his rich vein of form during the last few weeks has he notched up centuries against Butterley and Codnor. He smashed a masterful unbeaten 171 at home to Butterley, in just 40 overs of batting. He smashed 16 fours and 9 sixes and shared an opening stand of 151 with Trev Hessey (37). Gareth Owen and Dean Shaw both fell cheaply, so Mark Prance, who has found runs hard to come by up to this point, smashed an unbeaten 26 in an unbroken 4th wicket stand of 59 with Brear. After 40 overs and 269 runs on the board, Marshall called time on the Heanor innings. For Butterley the best bowler was Paul Oldcorn (8-1-17-0) but injury put an end to his day with the ball. Spells from Probart (9-0-67-0) Andy Bonsall (3-0-34-0) and Hardwick (2-0-28-0) felt the brunt of the Brear blade. It must be said spells from Knighton (10-0-55-1) and Mark Dance (8-1-62-2) who downed the gloves at drinks, fought manfully against a serious onslaught.
With 52 overs to get the runs, Butterley had a bad start as in Pete Thompson broke through in his 3rd over having Beech caught at 1st slip by Marshall for a duck. Dance and Andy Bonsall now took the attack to the Heanor bowlers with some fast scoring. The introduction of slow bowlers Taylor and Halford was the key at this point as Dance (34) fell to a great catch by Prance at extra cover ending a stand of 70. Bonsall (32) then was bowled by Colin Taylor. These wickets brought a collapse to the fragile if not aggressive Butterley middle order. Halford and Taylor both bowled tight and wicket taking spells. Taylor (16-6-40-3) bowled well on a slow deck at Heanor and Halford (13-4-34-2). Probart came in at 8 (a tad low one feels) and looked every bit a class player as he played a mixture of attack and defence. He found a more than able partner in Hardwick as the pair put on 66 for the 8th wicket. Harchuk (1-46 off 10) was wayward but dismissed Hardwick for 24 but Probart scored a fine unbeaten 68 including 13 fours. Number 10 Shelton batted out the remaining overs with Probart as Heanor couldn’t breakthrough in 52 overs of trying. Butterley finished on 179-8.

The following week a trip to Codnor greeted Heanor, who were firm favourites in this match. After looking at a strange looking pitch Marshall took no chances and put Codnor in. Codnor started off very slowly indeed as only 18 runs came from the 1st 14 overs of the innings. Burns fell 1st for Codnor, offering no shot to a Taylor googly and was adjudged lbw by umpire Fenn.. Taylor then dismissed Frost for 0 to leave Codnor 27-2 off 18. Harchuk then dismissed Bradley for 1, then Taylor got the mainstay Mark Woolley (19) caught by Brear from a loopy full toss. Harchuk went through Wood’s defence in his final over to finish with with 14-7-21-2. In tandum with Taylor (14-5-27-3) these two put the visitors in a strong position. Heanor then let things drift as Lanyon (33) Wood (22*) and Spicer (12) smashed a late innings revival but Brear (7-0-32-3) was called upon and bowled well in the closing overs. Codnor finished with 137-9.
In reply the Andy Brear show was about to commence. With just 137 to chase, Hessey fell for 6 in a 57 opening stand, and Gaz Owen also fell for 6 both to Arnold (7-1-29-2), which left the rest of the total to Andy Brear. He carved out his 4th century on the trot which surely is close to a league record. He smashed an unbeaten 113 which included 7 fours and 11 sixes. Millington (0-29 off 3) and Mills (33 off 5) took some punishment as the total was knocked off inside 27 overs. This victory took Heanor Town to the top of 4N as results went our way. This position is backed up with the insurance of having a game in hand.

So with the league campaign going well, it was now time for the cup. With Heanor being in the bayley cup, some higher division opposition was expected. Belper Meadows came to Heanor and a fine sunny day and hard wicket was present so a good match was in prospect. Belper won the toss and unsurprisingly batted 1sts. Bailey fell in the 1st over, caught behind my Dick Owen off Thompson for 0. Mike Cox reached 12 when Harchuk bowled him to leave Belper 24-2 from 10 overs. Andy Goodall and Ali Harrop-Griffiths took the score to 47 when leg spinner Taylor had the latter caught and bowled for 10. Steve Moran hit a fine straight six off Taylor but got a leading edge as he skied Hessey and Prance took the catch. Goodall and John Alden took the score to 70 when after after all the hard work of getting to 31, Goodall cut a Hessey long hop straight to Marshall at short 3rd. Dan Challinor came out and looked in an aggressive mood but fell for 11 when trying to sweep Taylor. Colin Taylor now ran through Belpers lower order as Beard (6) Ben Goodall (1) both fell to the veteran. John Alden played by far the most fluent for Belper striking 7 fours in 50 until he came Colin Taylors 5th victim. Colin Taylor finished with 5-34 from his 10 overs, Harchuk 1-21 from 10 including 5 maidens and Trev Hessey (3-20 off 5.2) as he took the final wicket of Bramall for 13. Belper finished on 147 all out.
Hessey and Brear came out for the reply. Brear had 12 out of 15 when in the hunt for a 5th ton on the spin, but young Carnelly forced him to play on. Brear was out having scored his 562nd run of the season, which after just 5 league games and a cup match it nothing short of phenomenal. Paul Marshall came out at 3, one match before his knee op. He struck 3 fours in his 22 when he offered a return catch to John Alden. The wicket came as a surprise as Marshall was looking good. Trev Hessey was still there and look in no bother at all, and he look determined to see Heanor to the end. Mark Prance had scored 8 when he was bowled by Bramall. Gaz Owen came to the crease and supported Hessey in bringing the team home by 7 wickets. Hessey had won the game with the bat for Heanor, playing a fine innings of 75*. He struck 9 fours in his innings. Gaz Owen was unbeaten with 12. For Belper Carnelly (1-28 off 8) and Bramall (1-26 off 10) put in the hard yards for Belper on a batsmans paradise but to no avail as Hesseys innings was the difference. Heanor winning by 7 wickets. In the next round Heanor play home to Brailsford 1st XI.

The 2nd team have also reached the top of their division. They lead Old Park in 7C by a handful of points. Looks like the fixture between the two could be crucial. The 2nds got a winning draw on the Saturday at home to St Lukes. John Parkinson struck a fine 90 which put up a fine total but the wicket was the winner as Heanor couldn’t bowl their opposition out. On the Sunday, the 2nds batted 1st at Quarndon. Jason Cross smacked a century including 6 big sixes, (the first by a 2nd teamer this year). The home side then were skittled for 90 with Steve Morley taking 4 wickets.

So both sides top of the league and both through to the 2nd round of the cup. Heres to the continuation of the success so far and lets hope both sides can stay where they are!
