Openers Brear and Walker marched out first for the home side looking to get things moving. Andrew Hill opened the bowling and with some away movement was troubling Brear outside off stump as Brear played and missed on more than one occasion and during this early spell he had Brear dropped at cover by Flack. At the other end, Ashbourne employed the tactic of opening the bowling with a spinner in Bembridge. With the score on 37 in the 10th over, Walker went to hit a full toss from the spinner over the top but didnt hit it at all right as the ball went a mile in the air and was caught by Flack at cover. Mark Fletcher joined Brear. Not long after Walker had fell Brear again had another life as he drove to mid off where Bloor dropped an easy catch again off the unlucky Andrew Hill. Brear was soon to make Ashbourne pay. Mark Fletcher and Andy Brear soon were finding their best touch after the shine of the new ball had wore off with a number of fine shots. Gadsby (12-1-70-0) Flack (6-1-35-0) and Hellaby (8-0-50-0) all suffered at the hands of the 2nd wicket pair, and had took the score all the way to 203 in the 40th over when the returning Hill, removed Brears middle stump to end a fine knock of 121 which included 16 fours and 2 sixes. It was a fine knock but it was rich justice for Hill who had argueably bowled the best at Brear from any opposition side this season. This wicket ended a fine partnership of 166 for the second wicket. With wickets in hand and runs wanted, Paul Fletcher came and went as he gloved behind off Hill for just 2, then Harchuk fell lbw for 0 off his second ball. Wright came in to join Fletcher and the pair had took the score to 241 when Fletcher fell for 79 in very strange circumstances. He went to hit a ball off Hill and as he went to hit it, fell to the floor in pain and has a suspected torn side muscle. As Fletcher was laying out of his ground, the keeper ran him out. Fletcher had struck 11 fours and a six in his fine knock. Next ball Brackenbury was bowled by Hill which left just one ball for Mark Cliff to face. He played the shot of the day as he played a gorgeous off drive for four to take Stapleford to 245-5 off their 46 overs. Andrew Hill finished with 14-3-51-4 without too much luck.
In reply Ashbourne made a positive start as Gadsby and Flack put on a nice stand. Gadsby then shouldered arms to Paul Fletcher and was given lbw for 16. A good stand followed as Flack and Roe both were playing in positive fashion until Roe was bowled by Cliff for 30. With attacking fields set, Bembridge and Flack were looking for boundaries. Boundaries were coming but Harchuk produced a good away swinger to Flack as he edged to Brear at 1st slip. In the same over Hellaby drove to point again off Harchuk to leave Ashboune 4 wickets down. Rowland joined Bembridge. Bembridge was looking more cautious but was hitting the bad ball. Rowland didnt have too many plans of hanging about as he hit a quickfire 20 before he was bowled by Andy Brear. Hill came in and he had a few flying edges which reached the boundary as him and Bembridge started to lay into Swain and Brear and a possible victory was on. Stapleford then took caution and applied a more defensive field and the batsman found runs much harder to come by. Hill was bowled by Swain and Tarr was caught behind off Brear and from that point on Ashbourne after having a brief sniff of victory, decided the draw was more of an option as Cope and Bembridge saw out the last few overs. Steve Bembridge finished with an unbeaten 59 as Ashbourne finished on 207-7 which was a creditable effort. It was nice to see a team play so positive in chasing a good score but were very sensible in playing for the draw in the end. Staplefords best bowlers were Paul Fletcher (14-1-42-1) Harchuk (9-2-27-2) and Brear (7-0-47-2).
Final Result
Stapleford Town (17) 245-7 (Brear 121, M Fletcher 79, Hill 4-51) drew with Ashbourne (11) 200-7 (Bembridge 59*, Flack 40)
