Seaton Carew Golf Club
CLASSIC GOLF LINKS OF GB & IRELAND
By Steve Smith - October 23 2006
The Club, 9th oldest in England, and 54th in the UK, was once known as the Durham and Yorkshire Golf Club as it was the first in those counties. >
"Seaton Carew at Hartlepool is the pick of Durham's courses, a club that has enjoyed playing on the same site longer than any other in the north of England."

"Because, in 1874,the year of its founding, there were no other clubs in Durham or Yorkshire, it started life with the comprehensive title of the Durham and Yorkshire Golf Club."

".....but Seaton Carew and Seacroft remain the only true championship links in the east from Norfolk to Northumberland."

"A slender strip of undulating ground houses a rare challenge that....deserves close scrutiny."

"By now, the formidable sea buckthorn has made its spiky bow and the par-5 13th, 559 yards, runs the gauntlet of it on the right, but it is here to stay.Apart from the 15th, the only par 3 on the back nine, it dominates the drives on the last few holes..."

"However, the real memorable hole is the 17th, an Alister MacKenzie (Augusta)original - its title of Snag is a definite understatement."

" Bunkered left and right, it rises at varying levels to a proud position that defies all except the bravest and best. A study of it alone justifies a visit to Seaton Carew."

The words and an appreciation from Donald Steel.
