Seaton Carew Golf Club
First Course in Durham and Yorkshire!
By Brian Quinn - January 7 2007
When Dr Duncan McCuaig came to practice medicine in Middlesbrough shortly after winning the R & A's gold medal in 1867 and 1869, he was horrified to find that there was not a course in the whole of Durham and Yorkshire. >
He quickly resolved to rectify the situation and settled on the snooks of Seaton Carew, which reminded him greatly of his beloved St. Andrews. Together with other friends they managed to play a 14-hole golf course.

When other golfers came they formed a club in 1874 which they called the Durham and Yorkshire Golf Club. It thus became the first golf club in Durham and Yorkshire and one of the first 50 golf clubs in the world.

In 1887, after the formation of other clubs in the area, the name was changed to Seaton Carew Golf Club, a club house was built a year later and in 1891 four holes were added to provide an 18 hole course. Unfortunately, Dr. McCuaig died before the course was completed.Over the years the finest golfers in the country played at Seaton Carew including the legendary Harry Vardon, J.H.Taylor, James Braid and several other open champions. In the 1930's the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, played the course whilst visiting the area, and his autograph and photograph to mark his visit can be seen in the Clubhouse.

Our golf club crest is taken from our Thomson Medal, which has been competed for annually since 1883. It combines the emblems of the Archbishop of York and the Bishop of Durham.
