COURSE MATTERS
All the winter restrictions are now off. There is no placing on the fairways and the ropes etc will be removed. The 17th Bunker is back in play – no more experimentation this season. The 8th Green will come back in to play with a marked area for relief.. The cold weather in March has delayed the annual green preparation and may affect the Spring Meeting.

CALCUTTA ENTRIES
Entries are being taken for the Calcutta knockout singles and pairs competitions. These should be made through the professional shop in the usual way.

TSU WINTER FOURSOMES
Michael Wilson & Mark Westmoreland are through to the semi-finals of the TSU Winter foursomes with a good away win at Castle Eden against the Dickinson brothers.

SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING
Please make every effort to attend the Special General Meeting on Friday 4th April at 7.30. The Meeting will debate and vote on fundamental changes to our rules, which in
the Committee’s view will have a huge importance on the development of our club. There are a number of issues that have been raised within the Club since the Committee’s proposals were distributed, so this is an attempt to answer them.
§ No current member of the Club will lose his or her existing status.
§ Membership rates for all existing categories will be produced at the AGM by
the Treasurer for the approval of the membership. (See notes re Proposed Rules 15a)
§ The Midweek category is new, and allows for someone joining the Club for
the first time. It also allows a full member without 10 years membership to “downgrade” to five days at a rebated level below the full membership rate, which is his or her only option to date. (See notes 13.2 and letter on Club Noticeboards)
§ A number of Clubs have opted for CASC Status to obtain mandatory rate
relief - £15,000 and none has found ANY problem in relation to maintaining its control on who joins the Club, or plays the Course. CASC is NOT a means of bypassing issues, which the Clubs’ Committee would consider in deciding on new members joining the Club; bearing in mind those issues cannot be discriminatory. There has been no occasion upon which discretionary relief (a further £3000) has been awarded if the Club has not first of all obtained CASC.
§ The Proposed Changes to the size of the Committee and a Committee
Chairman (See notes 4 & 6). The Committee is seeking continuity from a Chairman, and recognises the value of co-opting non-Committee personnel for specific functions based on his or her expertise.
§ The distribution of assets cannot be reversed but the Committee feels that
the series of actions taken to control expenditure (including the attempt to obtain rate relief) will take away the real threat of financial “meltdown”. Did any of you join the Club in the hope of obtaining a share of its assets? – we think not!
§ The Treasurer will be providing a report for the meeting covering the whole
financial picture and how CASC Status fits into that picture.

TEAM MATCHES
Both our teams are out of the Mail on Sunday Classic competition after narrow home defeats by the same 3-2 margin. Seaton Men went down to a competitive Garesfield, who took full advantage of their handicap allowances. The visitors battled tenaciously in atrocious strong winds and snow showers. Nevertheless Seaton will be disappointed to lose at such an early stage. Kris Diamond and Ian Hendry were Seaton's two winners.
The Ladies lost to Saltburn 3-2 with wins for Debbie Frankland and Linda Willis. The other three all matches were close, one was lost on the 17th and two on the 18th.

ASTROTURF The path to the first tee will soon be laid. Another chance to praise the indefatigable Arthur Gatenby, David Lithgo & Jim Cockburn.
HEAD PROFESSIONAL
A warm welcome to Clifford Jackson, who has just been appointed as the new Head Professional to Seaton Golf Club from the 1st April. Cliff started as a junior member of our club and on leaving school trained first here under Bill Hector and then at Castle Eden. He has since been a PGA qualified professional for 13 years. Cliff worked abroad in Italy and Ohio, returning to work in Sussex and Gosforth. He was short-listed for the Seaton job in 2002. Since then Cliff has been Director and Teaching Professional at the Yarm Golf Academy.

COUNTY CRICKETERS WEEKEND
Captain Steve Smith was rewarded for his initiative with an excellent weekend's golf entertaining a strong team of ex-County Cricketers led by Seatonian and Test umpire George Sharp. Strong winds featured the Saturday play but an hour's rain failed to dampen the enthusiasm. A 4-man sponsored friendly team format brought a victory for Ted Jackson's team with ex-Northamptonshire cricketer Wayne Osman, plus Seaton stalwarts John Hall & Mick Chalk scoring 87 points.
Sunday's play saw Seaton defeat the visitors 5-3. However Wayne Osman showed his liking of the Seaton course by pairing up with ex-Somerset professional Jeremy Lloyds to beat John Hall & Mick Chalk 2&1. Steve Smith's partner Ian Hendry managed six birdies in his round as they beat George Sharp and his fellow Test umpire Neil Mallender.
The Cricketers thoroughly enjoyed their weekend. Their Golf Society was founded in 1935 and they play a number of other prestigious clubs including Royal St Georges, Ganton & Woburn. It is hoped that this may become an annual fixture

BAR & CATERING
The Kitchen is now open from 9 am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday (closes at 4pm on Sunday). The Brewery changes are being implemented.

SOCIAL EVENTS
England beat Ireland by a very narrow margin to retain the St Patrick’s Day Trophy. It was again an enjoyable sociable event. Members will have read Bob Morrell’s plea for better support of social events. Please make every effort to support some of our functions. They are really enjoyable – we just lack numbers.
There is an Italian night on Saturday 12th April with a good varied selection of meals at a cost of £12.50 per head for a 3-course dinner and dance. There are still a few places left Book now to avoid disappointment. May’s theme night is Mexican !
The Race Night on Saturday 26th April is also a top night – come and enjoy a flutter!
The March Quiz had to be postponed due to the short notice but there’s plenty of notice for the next one on Saturday 3rd May - you don’t need to be an Egghead – just join a small group and enjoy the evening.
