Duffield 2nd XI in 27 point win against Littleover
Wenden: Fluent 34
On the first Saturday in June the seconds ventured out to the King George V playing fields home of the Littleover Centurions, with a scratch eleven because of the firsts had taken the ant and senior Saunders also with the absence of Pete turner.
This looked a poor showing when by 1:30 their was only 2 players at the venue, claims were made sabotage in the relaying of the route but everyone was there as the first ball was bowled. With stevo losing another toss the littleover captain had no hesitation in putting us in. The openers were a mix of youth and experience being wenden and jerry bygraves and these set about the bowling in differing styles with graham taking every opportunity to hit the ball to the boundary, especially with a lovely pull over mid-wickets head for four, jerry had taken the studious approach and then once into his stride played some beautiful shots to the boundary.

But as drinks were due at the end of the over jerry hit a shot into the covers and went for a easy single but the fielder fumbled the ball and wenden called for the second and the fielder pinged in a throw straight over the stumps to leave graham well short of his ground wendens scored a excellent 34. Drinks where then taken eventually when Ted made his mind up. After the drinks kev sparham made his way to the wicket but was jerry’s partner for a short while with jerry skying a ball to mid-wicket with his score on 38.

This brought stevo (16) to the wicket and straight away set about the bowling hitting a couple of boundaries through the covers but after a short time he perished trying to cut one that didn’t get up and played on, that was the same for young keeper Sam Hamilton (1) chopping it onto leg stump. This brought in Woody and let the opposition know his intentions by hitting the first ball he faced to the boundary. He had also come to the wicket with a message for Harry (4) and it was to get a wriggle on and up the run rate but he failed miserably and holed out to mid off. Tony Mason the approached the wicket with authority and batted nicely for a short time but fell to a in ducker for only 2, meanwhile woody was having a little fun despatching anything of target to the boundary in a short but effective innings 0f 20 before not getting hold of a pull and skyied it to the keeper. This brought together Deadly and Jonty as per usual Alex had seen the first few balls he faced by slapping them to the boundary, so jonty was doing the right thing to turn the strike over to deadly who in his own inimitable style was boshing the ball over the boundary for six after six. Come the last over they were looking for as many runs as possible and had a conflab about it but after scoring 7 off 5 balls jonty struck the ball into the covers and ran sorry to say Alex wasn’t and sent him back leaving duffield with a total 186 for 8.

After tea we set about littleover creating pressure with excellent bowling from Elmo and Mace and Elmo struck first with wenden taking a excellent catch at point diving full length to clasp onto the ball, then it was tonys turn and got the other opener who chipped a drive up to Dave stevo in the covers. Next to happen was a Mr Ashraf took a liking to one of our bowlers unluckily it was Mr Mason who suffered being hit over the trees and halfway down the meadow for six, replacing the ball with the spare and he was then hit for another six the other side losing the spare into the process the only balls left available were new balls but seeing as we were only six overs in it didn’t seem to matter. Elmo charging in from the top end was having no luck but tied down the scoring and with the introduction of off spinner jonty Rhodes who after a wild first over settled down into a nice rhythm and helped keep a lid on the scoring eventually getting Ashraf just after he had made his half century with Sam taking a excellent stumping. Elmo was then replaced by Mace and got rewards by taking a couple of wickets that helped us to get on top of the opponents with JR helping and taking 3 more wickets 2 being in his final over ending with excellent figures of 4 for 58 off of his 14.

After mace had took his 2 wickets skipper decided to make it spin at both ends bringing on the young spin bowling of James Saunders and he had the batsmen in all trouble straight away and was rewarded with a wicket hitting the leg stump of the unfortunate batsmen, that left littleover with 1 remaining wicket in the shape of the injured wicket keeper so with eyes on 27 points stevo brought back Pete and Tony and mace did the job with his first ball with jerry taking a sharp catch at mid wicket, that left Tony with figures of 4 for 42 off 11.1 overs.

A great result, maximum points and it was through great commitment and a good team spirit that had kept the team strong! With return of some player’s next game hers hoping we forge onwards and upwards for the remainder of the season!
