One feels that, at the moment, the players might just have tensed up a little and this, coupled with the tactics employed by recent opponents, is preventing the side from cutting loose and showing the kind of form seen against the likes of Alnwick, Horden, Wallsend and Gosforth.
There is no doubt that, as top guns, Rovers will find their opponents raising their game against them and trying to slow play down and the next two matches at home to Stockton and away to Ashington are unlikely to be any different. The reverse fixtures then begin and, if anything, this pattern will be even more pronounced in the second half of the season.
With Iain Pinchen ruled out with tonsillitis, Michael Tucker came off the bench to replace him with Stuart Langston named as a sub. An early Chris Sainty penalty was cancelled out by one for John Hames but Rovers then scored two quick tries to lead 15-3.
Gareth Foreman showed great dribbling skills to take the ball from the 22 to the line, Sainty slotting a touchline conversion, and Andrew Foreman then raced home from a lineout on the Consett 10 metre line.
After near misses when Glen Wise and Michael Taylor were halted on the line, the number 8 touched down from a 5 metre scrum and Sainty’s conversion extended Rovers’ lead to 22-3.
The Whites were straight on the offensive after the break when Andrew Foreman broke but Mark Shires could not cling onto the ball. Sainty soon kicked another penalty to keep the scoreboard ticking over and Shires then got on the end of a good passage of play by Rovers. Skipper Mark Power and Stuart Palmer started things off and Phil Hall then forced his way to the line where the ball was recycled and Gareth Foreman timed the scoring pass to the supporting full back to perfection.
Play then degenerated into an error strewn period with only occasional chances cropping up. From one, Ben Cushlow was held up when over the line after good approach play by the backs and, later,Shires could not get the ball down when under pressure by the corner flag.

well played everyone -the team defended well when they had to - half backs showed their class again and I thought the boys in pink boots both had good games
