Conditions were blustery as had been the case in an earlier match with Percy Park but they couldn’t be blamed for what was a below par performance by the Rovers. Such are the high standards set by the players this season that their struggles in patches during the match did stand out.
Ryton put Rovers under early pressure and it took the White Shirts over ten minutes to exert some control over proceedings. When they did, they scored two tries in two minutes. Firstly Michael Taylor touched down as a 5 metre scrum went backwards over the Ryton line and Gareth Foreman then finished off a move started by brother Andrew, Chris Sainty converting Gareth’s score.
Sainty kicked a penalty on 24 minutes and added the extra points to the next try, Brian Foreman being on hand to take the try scoring pass from Andrew.
The second half was only 2 minutes old when Andrew Foreman touched down after his pack had pulled in the ball from a Mark Power lineout take and created time and space for the scrum half to exploit, Sainty again converting.
The next try saw Brian Foreman cross again in forceful style carrying defenders with him, this after a number 8 pick up by Taylor had started the move inside the Ryton 22. Sainty was on the mark with a good conversion, using the wind superbly at the clubhouse end.
Ryton had had to absorb pressure from Rovers and had very little offensive ball to use, however, sub Steven Lee who had belied his slight stature with some textbook tackling was on hand to cross in the Steetley corner when the visitors pressed into the home 22.
Mark Shires and Gareth Foreman then stood out as Rovers returned to the Ryton 22 where the ball was moved smartly along the line, Phil Hall receiving to touch down in the left hand clubhouse corner.
The restart was something of a shambles for the White Shirts and the points by Hall were wiped out when Glen Wymes charged unopposed to the line from the 22, Steven Fudge converting.
Rovers have another potential banana skin fixture at Consett on Saturday where they will be looking to return to the form of previous weeks.
