Official Hartlepool Rovers
Gareth Foreman West Hartlepool Preview
By R&O - April 18 2008
Hartlepool Rovers face deadly rivals West Hartlepool, for the fourth and most important time this season, at Brinkburn on Saturday (kick off 3pm), knowing that a win in the derby will secure North Two East status for next season. >

The Friaragemen, despite a recent mini revival, will start as massive underdogs against champions elect West and with no-one outside of the club expecting anything other than a West win. The games this season have been keenly and closely fought encounters, especially the league match at the Friarage that saw West pip Rovers 20-19. The Boxing Day clash went the way of West 19-0 as did the January friendly 21-3 but it is this Saturday’s game that counts.

Rovers can still stay up if they lose but they would need Old Crossleyans (v York) or Carlisle (v Driffield) to lose and both of those games have ‘home win’ written all over them. West will want to not only secure the title, which is almost mathematically theirs anyway, but also to send their rivals down into Durham Northumberland One.

This match began to assume massive importance only a few weeks into the season when the Whites hit the buffers after a string of poor results and which culminated in the sacking of Kevin Westgarth. Results and performances have picked up of late but have Craig Lee and his players left it too late to beat the drop?

Last Saturday’s win over Aspatria, and especially the second half, saw Rovers play the type of game that everyone knows they are capable of but that has been shown only in patches this season. If the White Shirts can reproduce their second half display and do it over the eighty minutes then Rovers are capable of repeating their league win at Brinkburn in September 2005.

For Saturday’s game, Lee has an enforced change to the squad named for the Aspatria game, Simon Rutherford is working and the veteran centre will be a big loss to Rovers, Adie Rose replaces him.

Durham Society referee John Meredith is the man in charge of this key match.

West: Painter, Thorn, Hodgson, Howe, A Cheslin, Moss, Tighe, Carr (c), A Dixon, Robinson, T Dixon, Davies, D Boatman, J Boatman, Rudd. Subs: Norris, Garside, C Cheslin

Rovers: Shires, Lilley, B Foreman, P Hall, Sainty, G Foreman (c), A Arnell, Tucker, J Cushlow, Wise, Wallis, D Smith, Kirton, S Hall, Grazier. Subs: Taylor, Rose, Bingham

Referee: John Meredith (Durham Society)

This is the one.

As we proved in the Friarage game we are easily capable of winning, we could have won that day.

If we can lower their colours then it'll put a serious damper on their promotion party on Saturday night..................now wouldn't that be a pity!!:oD:oD

Hey the official word is, promotion aint in the bag yet.

you never know you might stick 50 points on them and DC do the same at Aspatria or whoever they are playing.

RoverandOut : 'we could have won that day'
You could have won any other game had you scored more points than the other teams, or have you not worked that onbe out yet ...
Had you won that game, relegation might have bin out of the question and as to putting a dampner on our promotion party, @least we're having 1 :oD

Which club in the town holds the record for the number of consecutive relegations?

I love the way most West players are fairly magnanmous, the many fans they have who don't have a clue about rugby are another matter.

FRLE That could be the same club that holds the record for consecutive promotions. Me thinks the little Green monster is raising its head

No just reminding some of the people with short memories (1989).

I do remember West having a bigger celebration than us in the same season Rovers got promoted because they didn't get relegated.

Why would I be jealous about anything to do with rugby? I play 3rd team rugby for the only club in the town to have a 3rd team and have a laugh with my mates.

If West Fan does want to get historical with me I can trump almost anything you can come up with cos I am a seriously geeky statto.
