As Chris Collins said at the AGM (and I can back this up from putting numerous Junior fixture lists together). Sometimes the fixtures just work out this way if you have to juggle your own pitch availability against those of the teams you are hoping to play so this year we have loads of home games before Christmas and not very many after. At least it's better than being away loads before Christmas because the home games mean we should gather numbers and momentum.
If the players coming through from the Junior Section all make themselves available as they have promised they would we will have more than enough. The travelling the 2nd Team do really isn't that far away either, it's not like Aspatria, Sheffield and Leeds are on the fixture list.

well if this is the case, will there be a 2nd team coach or mini-bus organised so we all travel together ???

Unlikely I would say considering most of the travelling is up the road and Coaches and Mini busses are hardly cheap.
Plenty of the second team lads drive so it shouldn't be a problem.

I think a coach has been requested for Alnwick away.
Apart from that the travelling is no more than a normal second team season, just clustered together more.

I'm assuming selection will be made by the appropriate person after training as usually happens.
All are welcome into senior rugby and indeed if a third team is to take off then everyone muct attend for games or we won't get a side out.
I'm sure that people (especially the young lads) will get their chance in the Heughers if they are training and playing well and the third team is a good place to start.

The way it will probably work is as follows:
Selection will take place after training by the coaches.
If you get your backside out training, do your own fitness work on non training nights and look good during training and games you will probably find yourself in the 1st team Squad or 2nd team Squad.
If you haven't made the grade for the 1st team or 2nd team you will be selected in the 3rd team.
If you don't train regularly you will be selected and expected to turn up for the thirds. If you haven't been down for awhile and your name isn't on the third team selection list you will also be more than welcome to turn out for the thirds.
If you are coming back from serious injury and it's felt you need some game time but in a less competitive environment you may be selected for the thirds.
If you haven't been playing well in either the 1st or 2nd team and there is a player in the 2nd or 3rd team playing better than you the chances are that the better player will be in your place the next week.
Of course this policy is not set in stone and only gleaned from the conversations I have had with Messrs Westgarth and Lee and might be subject to their own opinions.
In my humble opinion the message is this:
If you are serious about your rugby, get fit and train like mad and get noticed by the coaches. If you want a social but fun amble about the park turn out week in/week out for the thirds.
As a bit of advice to the young lads coming through from the Junior Section I would say don't expect to get straight in the first or even the second team, your place will be earned on merit. Most players who have been at Rovers long enough to remember when we last had a regular third team will tell you that at 17/18 year old very few players are truly ready for 1st team rugby and it's worthwhile playing 3rds for one or more seasons to learn the tricks of the trade as alluded to earlier by Carrotts and Tragic on the 3rd Team thread.
For those of you U20 we are also arranging a few U20 games on a Sunday afternoon so that you still get the odd run out against lads your own age. From this you will see your U20 game benefit from 2nd/3rd team experience and your 2nd/3rd team game benefit from playing against young fit types.

I'm a little confused about this term "Development Squad"? It seems to suggest that young lads either have there own side or that the Second team will be used only to try and produce talent for the firsts.
What about the lads who play well for the second team every week but are realistically not going to be in contention for the firsts? does that mean they drop to the thirds while an 18 year old who's not as good takes their place?
Perhaps Jimmy can shed some light on this.

its probably just to make freindly competition between the players to keep players on there toes and make sure no one can take there postition in any team for granted.
But if a young player was to move into a position of some else that is older and more experianced in senior rugby does not mean that this player would be realistically good for the 1st team eather.

A third team is a good thing. When I was 16 17 and 18 I played for the 3rds a few times. It was my first taste of senior rugby and I enjoyed it. I played along side Mick Hanley, Buster, Bri Robbo even tuggy and Belly had a few games. Obviously my supreme talent and potential got noticed as I was playing well and training regular and I got my chance for the 2nd team. The following season I was selected for the firsts and I have been there or there abouts for the past 7 years. When I was out of the first team picture I just got on with it, tried hard for the seconds, trained harder and guess what...back in the firsts. So when ran properly theses teams can work well and it is good for the club and players. i also remeber we had an u20 team which was good as we could play against lads our own age, something you miss out on when you play for the 1sts. Its good and helps development. On paper this all sounds very good but will it work..well it will if we get enough players and managers/coaches like miffy and tony smith to turn up every week.

We are not using the term "Development Squad".
The Junior Section are arranging around 6 U20 games so that the lads aged 17-19 can still get a few games against their own age group as well as a senior run out.
Everyone will be playing for a team on merit. If you are on the second team then potentially you will be the 2nd best player in the club at your position (or 3rd best if someone in your position is on the1st XV bench) and so on.
If the 18 yr old 3rd teamer is talking about is not as good as you he will not be selected ahead of you. I can assure you from the way this was planned throughout the latter half of last season one of the main things the club is trying to avoid is any nepotism within the selection process.

Awful fixture list for the coming season, you have a stretch after christmas of eleven games with only one at home, how bad is that, enough to cheese anyone off. Give your fix sec a kick up the a**e if you ask me.

BB,
He was working on the basis of not turning anything down, quite rightly as he wouldn't have got any games otherwise.
Pitch availability for the home 2nd XV sides due to 1st XV league fixtures etc has caused this imbalance.
At least the lads have a huge run of home games and a lot of the away games are within 20/30 minutes drive.

I would just like to underline what some other posters have said and I think its important for players to not become pre-occupied with which team they play for, we are all after all Rovers to the core.
Players can take the the attitudes of Kirto, Philly Hall and Pervy as good examples.
If you train hard and play well, you will get every chance to play at highest level your natural skill allows.
I can remeber when Rovers had 5 senior teams and as a 16, 17 yr old played for both 3rd & 4th teams, indeed it was these games playing with the likes of Buster, Sammy Davenport, Ian & John Ainslie among many others, who are responsible for giving me the skill needed to survive in senior rugby.
Turn up every week play where your picked, enjoy the game and your mates, don't become premadonnas.

yeah pervy is a great example. a true proffessional. man mountain. don't take too much notice of Kirto or that other lad who looks like pervy. both let downs and they can't drink much, philly snores and kirto enjoys aqua aerobics in his sleeping bag!! stick with pervy. what an example to any young amature rugby player.

I would like to quantify my previous post.
Obviously don'y use Pervy as a role model for life, just his and Kirtos and several others who when dropped last year could have spat their dummies out but didn't.
Obviously don't use them as an example of how to lead your life. I mean too much fake tan ids bad for the skin and porn can make you go blind!:-!
