    HISTORY OF MACCLESFIELD RUFC
 

1874

Rugby played in Macclesfield under the auspices of the 8th Cheshire Rifle Volunteers.

 

1877

Macclesfield Rugby Football Club formed playing at the Cricket Club.

J W H Thorp (Captain) who became President of Cheshire in 1883 for 20 years and President of the RFU in 1898.

 

1878

Macclesfield affiliated to the Union.

 

1927

Formation of the present Club with a game against Davenport on 1 January 1927.  W J Siggins (Captain). 
Home games at
Congleton Road.

 

1928/9

New ground and headquarters - Cock Inn, Henbury.  Played 26, Won 22, Lost 3, Drawn 1.    346 – 95.

 

1932

New Ground, Fallibroome (present site?).

 

1939/45

12 members lost their lives during War service.

 

1946

Club revived after the War years under the Presidency of T Turnbull and Chairmanship of W E Whiston.

 

1950/1

After ‘lodging’ at King’s School when the use of the Fallibroome ground ceased, the Club opened its new ground and clubhouse on London Road on 9 September 1950.

 

1961/2

New grounds and clubhouse at Tytherington opened by President of Cheshire and the Mayor of Macclesfield on 7 September 1961.

 

1971

Mini/Junior Section formed under George Lewis as Chairman.

 

1975/6

Cheshire Colts Shield Winners

 

1980/1

Move to Priory Park on 14 September 1980.

 

1981/2

Cheshire Plate Winners

 

1984/5

Colts win Cheshire Shield.

1985/6

Founder member of Girobank North West League. 
Colts retain Cheshire Shield.

1991/2

Cheshire Cup winners for the first time.

Under 17s win Cheshire Youth Cup competition.

 

1992/3

North West I Courage League winners.

 

1993/4

Cheshire Plate winners.

 

1994/5

North 2 winners – Cheshire Cup winners for second time.

 

1996

Co-operative Bank Lounge and new changing rooms opened.

 

2001

Under 11s win Cheshire Youth Cup competition.

 

2001/2

Cheshire Cup Winners for the third time. 
Six members of 1st Team in Cheshire County side, reaching County Championship final at Twickenham. 
Losing semi-finalists in Intermediate Cup.

 

2002/3

125 years of rugby in Macclesfield celebrations.  Promoted to National 3 North after second place play-off.     Played 22, Won 17, Lost 5.   645 – 354.

Cheshire Cup winners for fourth time. 
8 Club members in the Cheshire County Championship squad.

 

2003/4

Member of National 3 North. 
2nd & 3rd XV won their respective Divisions in the Fairclough Homes NW Intermediate League. 

 

2004/5

Member of National 3 North
2nd in league-lost Play-off game for promotion to League 2 at Redruth
Runners up in Cheshire Cup 
2nd team Joint Winners of Premier Division of NW Leagues
3rd team 2nd in Division 2 of NW Leagues achieving promotion
New Astro-Turf facilities opened Oct 2004 
 

2005/6

Member of League 3N
Cheshire Cup Winners
2nd XV reached final of the Halbro Cup
Under 17s (Junior Colts) reached divisional play offs
 
2006/7 Member of League National 3N
Cheshire Cup Winners (Retained)
2007/8 Member of League National 3N
Cheshire Cup Runners-up
2008/9

1st team-3rd in National 3 North and regained the Cheshire Cup
2nd team -2nd in Bateman BMW Premier League and won the Halbro Cup
3rd team won promotion to Miller Homes Division 1
