Clowne Town V Belper Meds
Clowne Town Bat out Against Belper! 28/06/03 At Clowne
Clowne Captain Phil Bennett again won the toss and inserted Belper Meadows on a damp wicket still recovering from friday's deluge..
Another week saw another new ball pairing with Matt Linacre and Dave Keys beginning the bowling, Linacre bowled a tidy spell going at less than four runs per over in his five overs. Keys was in inspired form at the other end darting the ball around, he soon had Bailey caught behind but the umpire mystifyingly turned down the appeal. However Keys eventually got his man having Bailey well caught off a slower one by Darren Greveson for 24. Josh Womble took up the attack and bowled a very tidy spell of leg spin keeping the batsmen guessing and ending with creditable figures of 11-1-45-0. Keys meanwhile was bowling arguably the seconds spell of the season so far and although he took no more wickets he finished with the superb figures of 14-5-22-1. Parsons took over from Keys and Greveson from Womble as Belper pressed the accelerator and took advantage of the lack of wickets down. Parsons was particularly expensive going for 65 off his 9 overs although he did pick up Jones caught by Keys for 37, had Alden(44), caught and bowled and then had Wild(38) well caught by Mark Barton. It was a case of the bowler trying a little too hard to cement his return to the team. Darren Greveson kept a much tighter reign ending with 7-0-41-0 not a bad effort with the slog on as Belper finished with 200-4 off 46 overs.
Denby 200-4
Clowne's reply got off to a poor start with new opening bat Mark Barton falling in the 2nd over caught at square leg off Mcgonigal. Phil Bennett and Graham White steadied the ship and took the score on to 48 before White fell again in the "twitchy twenties" 21 this time, to Borland. Ryan Bennett came and went for a golden duck before Paul Osborne and Phil Bennett pushed the score on to 81 before Bennett gave it away with a horrible mow at Borland having made a turgid 36 off 33 overs. However his innings was put into context as the middle and lower order imploded 81 for 4 became 84 for 9 as Mark Osborne(0), Matt Linacre(0), Paul Osborne(13), Josh Womble(2) and Dave Keys(0) all trooped back to the pavilion in a mad fifteen minutes. However a fine defensive rearguard action was fought by Greveson and Parsons who took the score onto 109 for 9 at the close to force an unlikely draw.
Pick off the bowlers was Brammall with 13-6-14-4 who gained surprising lift off the damp surface and was always a threat.
All in all a reasonably creditable draw considering the weakened side that was fielded with some of the players called upon making a statement regarding next week's selection.
Clowne 109-9
