This Saturday, 15th November, will see the first of the new season’s fundraisers taking place with the inaugural football match between a Clay Cross CC XI and the Sir Jim Carley Select XI.
The game is scheduled to take place at Sharley Park on the pitch next to the cricket pavilion and will kick off at 2pm(ish) and will be followed by beer and food in the pavilion bar afterwards.
The oppositions manager Jim Carley has so far kept his line up under wraps so little is known about them other than ex Clay Crossers Darren “TGO” Parkin and Chris “Mad Dog” Dent will be part of their set up but the Clay Cross squad was recently announced to waiting journalists and is as follows :-
Steve 'Glass Back' Else (GK)
Chris 'Norman Stanley' Fletcher
Matt 'Sports Bra Needed' Garner
Xander 'No Pace' Eyre
John 'Drillbit' Taylor
Steve 'Senior Pro' Nottingham
Chris 'Bam Bam Bigelow' Plant
Jon 'throws it like Rory Delap' Branson
Viscount William Hartley of Two Dales
Jordan 'Kipper' Crowder
Paul 'Over 200 League Appearences' Lemon
Andy 'Borrowing Pipeys Boots' Woolley
Jordan 'Junior' Lemon
Andrew 'Bambi' Watson
Luke 'There If It Turns Nasty' Riggott
Dave 'Never Be As Good As His Dad' Greaves
The CC Select XI has a good mixture of youth and experience but does carry some fitness doubts into the game. Andy Woolley is definitely out following a back injury carrying all Pipeys second hand kit in his cricket bag and could be joined in the treatment room by Chris Plant who has suffered a reoccurrence of a metatarsal injury caused by dropping his lunch on his foot and previous commitments regarding drinking beer. Another possible doubt is keeper Else who isn’t injured as yet but probably will be very soon but sufficient goalkeeper cover is provided by “Kipper” Crowder and “Drillbit” Taylor who both have plenty of experience in this position.
The CCCC XI will be looking to the experience of veterans Paul Lemon, who can be proud of his inclusion in a Sunderland FC worst players XI, and Steve Nottingham to help them through the game. The Cross XIs main attacking threat could well be the Delapesque long throw of central defender Branson, providing anyone in the team can head it, and is expected to be used as often as possible to try and unsettle the SJCS XI.
On last inspection the pitch was looking like hindering the playing of any decent passing football with the grass quite long but probably wont hinder it as much as the lack of talent on show although its expected to be an end to end tussle…mainly because most on the pitch will probably be unable to run to one end and then back when the ball has been lost!! Much will depend on the back four of the Cross XI to protect keeper Else should he manage to make it onto the pitch and there are fears as to what may happen should he have to dive!!
On the sidelines the Cross XI will be coached by Richard Greenhalgh whilst Else is expected to keep physio Sunil Bhatt very busy. Wearing the impressive trench coat in a Ron Atkinson style will be Director of Football, John Else looking to pass on the wisdom he has picked up from years of watching Alfreton Town on Saturday afternoons. It was also hoped to add Graham “break his legs” Dent to this backroom team for his defensive knowledge but he declined the role in favour of an afternoon serving behind the bar and keeping the chilli warm.
So as the tension builds towards kick off on Saturday both teams will continue to train hard, or more likely not at all, ahead of the game. It is yet to be confirmed if the half time tipple will be Oranjeboom but no doubt plenty of alcohol will be available. Although a bumper crowd is expected the match is not designated as all ticket and you can pay the entrance price of nothing on the day to get in.

Planty
If your not playing who is going to sprint down that wing & deliver high balls for Jordan Lemon to nod in during the first half & help protect the 3-0 lead in the second by playing the Colin Bell role?
Colin Bell we're doomed.
