Clay Cross CC
2008 Season - So far so good!!
By Jon Branson - July 17 2008
A quick summary of whats happened so far in the 2008 season as the Clay Cross CC website gets back up and running!! Read on for news on all three teams and ground improvement news. >

We're coming up on the halfway point of the season and with the website a little bit out of date it seems a good time to review whats happened and get something new on here!! 2007 was a good season and the 2008 season is shaping up the same way as all three teams are at the right end of their respective divisions and more good news from the council regarding the ground.

Competing back in 2 North the firsts have carried on from their successful 3 North campaign and after ten games sit at the top of the division they were relegated from only a couple of seasons ago. This has mainly been down to being undefeated in those 10 games and the firsts have only been on the wrong side of the result once so far this season when they held out for a losing draw at home to Pilsley. Of the 10 games two have been won batting first against Darley Dale and South Wingfield whilst they have successfully chased down totals in four games against Duffield, Wirksworth, Denby and Ambergate. Two winning draws against Quarndon and Chesterfield and a cancelled trip to Belper Ams make up the results.

The seconds hit the ground running following their promotion to 4N as they won seven of their first 8 games including five wins batting first which opened up a substantial lead at the top of the table. This run was ended with a defeat at second place Little Eaton and has since been followed by a cancelled home game against Holmewood but they still have a lead at the top of the table and will be looking for a top two finish to be part of the new Division 3 for the 2009 season.

The thirds have carried on from a couple of good seasons and are again challenging at the top of 7N under the guidance of captain Clarke. A mix of youth and experience has seen some impressive results with three wins and just the one defeat in nine games. They did benefit from the non appearance of Ambergate when most games were cancelled picking up 27 points instead of 5 points.

Full records of results and scorecards can be found on the relevant team page on the left hand menu.

Off the field its been a bit busy as the committee reacted to news from the council that they wished to do some ground work. Using unwanted top soil removed during the building of the new school just below the ground they are going to level the outfield of the main ground to make it look better and also make it a little easier to field on.....and also prevent some of the comedy moments we have seen over the years where people are unable to cope with the ups and downs and generally falling over!!

So its all set for a good second half of the season.....reports will follow this week for the last games of the first half of the season!!
