Official Wombourne CC
Wombourne CC (3rd XI) vs Aldridge CC
By Ben Woodall - July 5 2006
Your latest installment from Wombourne's 3rd XI as this week we took on Aldridge's 3rd XI over at the Express & Star ground on Saturday 1st of July. >
On a baking hot day (where HAS this weather come from all of a sudden!?) our 3rd’s took to the field again, looking to build up some momentum after last weeks win going into the second half of the season. With possibly our strongest side fielded this season we knew we were in with a chance if we batted and bowled to our potential.

Wombourne were put into bat on what was going to be your stereotypical E & S track. Jack & Coops opened up, after the latter’s promotion from the 4th’s, against some fiercely competitive opening bowlers. After a solid stand of around 35, both batsmen departed in quick succession, bringing Simon & Edger to the crease. An enforced change of bowling meant we could now look to exploit the weaker bowlers. However, after some lusty blows from Edger and a patient knock from Mr Scarth, Si was ‘done’ by a smart catch from the keeper and Edger didn’t hang around for long either, only after peppering the boundary a number of times as only Edger does.

This brought Diddy to the crease firstly, and after playing himself in he was working the singles well and picking the bad balls for some priceless boundaries. WSW joined him at the crease but didn’t last long before he was ‘done’ by the track. Duddles came in looking to boost our total with approximately 10 overs remaining but lasted a whole 2 balls, apparently he was ‘done’ by the bowler but we are still awaiting proof! Diddy also perished soon after as he looked to hit over the top, only succeeding in finding mid-off, well batted though Did, a very steady 29 which held our innings together.

This left our two strike bowlers, Elk and Ditchy, with the chance to open their shoulders and secure us a decent figure to defend-and disappoint they didn’t! A few lusty blows saw us safely home to 160, a good score we thought on a difficult track.

So back out to field, and it was Elk and Ditch who opened up. The two pronged ‘pace’ attack started off brightly with Ditchy finding a great deal of bounce as he attempted to unsettle the Aldridge batsmen. After a bright opening spell, they were both removed as the heat was beginning to take its toll, leaving Ocker and Jordan the chance to make further inroads. However the Aldridge score was slowly creeping up, and despite us having them 8 down at the end, thanks to a late burst from Ditchy, we just didn’t get the breaks and they snuck home with a couple of overs to spare.

All in all it was fair to say we had one of those days. A decent batting performance that definitely had some positives, hopefully we can learn from this as next week we take on Penn, who will no doubt provide a very stern test.

On a sidenote, it’d be great to see as many Wombourne members (playing and non-playing) over at Brewood on Wednesday 5th of July as our 3rd’s take on Wolverhampton Courts in the 3rd XI K.O Final. All support will be gratefully received.

WSW.
