Another early-ish meet (10.30) for yet another trip down the M6.
Arrived at Coleshill to find a slightly strange looking ground, with a slope that would put Lords to shame, i'm sure. The square needed shifting about 20 yards to make the straight boundaries even close to equal too!
There was a slight delay waiting for the key-man/lady to arrive, giving some of us time to pop to Tesco for refreshments (Snickers flap-jacks, quality!), and Wagga, Dale and Mikey to express their liking for the deck as it had "loads of bounce" in it.
We bowled first (Ben won the toss I assume) and Liam found out the hard way that the bounce was there on a length, but was a tad tennis-bally when banged in. Calv from the other end proceeded to show the way, at the same time digging not just his usual trench, but a small cavern on his way to a marvellous 21 over stint. Mowgli replaced Wagwan and his swolen ankle, and made the first breakthrough, caught and bowled. The Coleshill run-rate was slow due to good bowling and fielding, and they only reached their hundred in the 40th over.
A few wickets fell in the middle overs as they were content to play tip and run it seemed, and although they took 85 off the last 15 overs, the wickets kept tumbling. Mowgli even had a chance at a hat-trick in the last over, and proceeded to chuck down a horrible wide! Small note for DQ's spell at the end. First two overs went for a few, but pulled it back well, and picked up a couple of well deserved rabbits.
So, chasing 186 to win, we thought we were in with an excellent shout for 20 points. However, we did not see Coleshill's secret weapon coming. The tea.
My God it was good. Chips, waffles, sausages, beans, sandwiches, pizza, pasta, salad, cakes, scones, chocolate bars...... you name it, it was there. A few of us waddled out afterwards, and I'd suggest that the Bear will be taking his own plate, a-la Rugeley should he be available when the 2's travel over there!
Stuey and the Sherriff opened up for us, and looked content, like they'd just had a good meal or something The bowling never looked overly threatening, and the score progressed without too many notable alarms. So it took Greggy to have a bit of a swipe at the spinner, no doubt trying to clear the 80 metre boundary straight, and get stumped. Stuey continued to go after the bad balls, Wagga joined him and immediately looked assured. The scoreboard ticked over very easily, and our major concern was whether Stu would be able to finish the game in a way that would allow him a hundred.
Instead, he left the party too early, having obviously over-indulged in the buffet and left us needing 6 to win, with a fine 92. Step up Sherm, with no thought of letting Wagga try the 4,6 combo that would allow him to win the game with 51*. No, straight in, take guard, straight back over the bowlers head. Twice in a row, game over.
So, there you have it, a comfortable win by 8 wickets. In fact, it was as clinical and efficient as the Germany result over Sweden that was on at the same time, just without the red-card!
Coleshill 9-185 (55 overs) O.P. Ener 60-odd. Mowgli 5-fer.
Wombourne 2-188 (30 ish overs?) S. Priest 92, Wagwan, 41*, Sherriff 38.
Coleshill 2 points, Wombourne 20.
