Well, after our lacklustre fielding and bowling performance last week meaning we settled for a losing draw, we were determined to put things right in the local derby.
After Benny and I deliberated on whether to bat or bowl first, he proceeded to lose the toss, and Beacon decided to bowl. Now, Wombourne is traditionally a road when the sun has been out, and 600 runs in 110 overs last week held this out, but we proceeded to get ourselves in the **** at 4-40 off about 15 overs, and 5-70 off about 20, with some pretty good bowling allied with some loose shots. This brought together Sherms and Mowgli, who produced a very un-Arif like sensible knock of 47, providing a perfect foil for Adam who mixed up some solid defence with some HUGE sixes all over the place. A few more handy partnerships allowed Snake to bring up a fantastic, hopefully first of many, League tons, and we scrambled to 260 all out in the 53rd, which was a good effort from where we were, and something to bowl at.
I'm not really sure where to start with the Beacon innings without sounding like i've been chowing down on some seriously over-ripe grapes, but I have NEVER seen so many balls edged, gloved, bunted and generally hacked into gaps that weren't really there. Fair play to anyone who gets a Birmingham League ton, but I think Mike Smith may have used his luck up for the season in this one!!!
Dale bowled beautifully without luck, Wagga bowled well, same with Calvin, and infact Arif and Benny too but nothing really went our way, and the poor start with the bat ended up costing us.
From now on, we have to realise that all three parts of the game are as important as each other, and they have to come in a package if we want to get back to picking up serious points.
Still, the weather was nice I guess!
Onwards and upwards Wombourne, good luck to all teams for the weekend again.
