Wombourne C.C vs Wednesbury C.C (3rd’s) 19/6/2006
The weeks are flying by at the moment and it came as a surprise to me that the season is already 9 weeks old! The season has, admittedly, not gotten off to the best of starts but hopefully we could pick up another victory today against a side we’d beaten only a couple of weeks ago in the knockout.
A number of late call up’s left us looking at taking to the field with another young side, but those young ‘uns are definitely capable of playing at this standard. So it was over to Aston Uni sports ground that we travelled on what was building up to be another scorching hot day.
Edger won the toss and elected to bat and we opened up with Diddy and Jack Phillips. Did was bowled early doors by the sharp-ish bowler from the one end, whilst the very rotund chap the other end kept it tight also. In came Matt Dudley, quickly followed by Edger as Jack was next to go. Edge didn’t last long either, spooning a catch to mid on. So that left us on about 20-3, and into the tail already! WSW was next man in at number 5, as he and Matt looked to stabilise the innings, Duddles became frustrated and tried to hit over the top, only succeeding in lobbing a dolly straight up in the air. So now 25 odd for 4 and it was looking like yet another 3rd XI batting collapse had well and truly started.
Ollie Smith was next to the crease, and he certainly didn’t fancy hanging around! Some loose shots were played but to be fair they did come off as he managed a couple of boundaries before he was bowled, missing a straight one. A number of other lads came and just as quickly departed, leaving us looking at a very lacklustre score. WSW was still in at this point, not exactly troubling the scorers but keeping it ticking as much as possible. A change of bowling saw us pick up the run rate slightly and we struggled along to approximately 70 for 8. Another wicket went and in strode Joe, once again helping us out after some late team changes. He played back the last ball of the over with solid technique, before next over Window’s took a single with 2 balls to go as he tried to keep strike. Joe didn’t fancy staying on 0, and tried to smash one over the top, only succeeding in looping a top edge straight back to the bowler, leaving WSW stranded on 39 not out, and the team 83 all out.
After a tea consumed in the changing rooms (lovely view of the showers), we ran out to field, knowing we’d have to give it our all if we were going to get anything out of this game.
Lee and Duddles opened up, bowling some good lines, yet still Wednesbury rode their luck slightly and kept the score ticking. A wicket for Matt came early on, but still Wednesbury kept the runs flowing. A bowling change saw young Jordan and WSW a chance to increase the pressure, and it partly paid off as we had Wednesbury four down, but it was alas too little too late as they finally reached our score after 20 evers.
So all in all another disappointing batting performance, next week sees us take on Cannock & Rugeley away, hopefully we can look to kickstart our season from there.
WSW.

Nice report Benny Boy, pity about the result. Nice knock though, especially considering the total.
