Official Wombourne CC
Wombourne CC Under 15's vs Netherton
By Malcolm Hughes - June 28 2007
Somehow the lads managed to get a game in last night despite the awful weather we've been suffering with, read on to find out how they fared against Netherton.... >
Finally we got a game on. A green but decent pitch offerred better prospects for bowling but Captain Jordan Russell lost the toss and had to open up with Martin Boyle.
With it seaming around our cautious start was predictable and Martin soon went. Jack Lane promoted and given his chance changed the impetus quite quickly with some telling deflections and a couple of lusty ones down the ground. Despite years of telling them how to call and run, they basically just chanced it to guesswork but incredibly managed to nick plenty of singles.Jordan, running in treacle with his pads on did settle down and played a very good innings and visibly grew in confidence which was very pleasing.Netherton bowled very well but their early catching was abysmal and both batsmen got away with several chances.

Laney made a good 29 and Jordan made a solid 39. James Vernon, one of the U13's made a great impression in a brief cameo of 15 and looks a nice prospect. Unfortunately for Azza and Windy, Netherton suddenly started to take some incredible catches and we finished on a decent 106 for 7.

Netherton had a classy left hander but Pod took a great catch to get him cheaply.Still Netherton fought hard and kept finding better and better batsmen down the order.Jordan bowled a mixture of good and bad but definately put the break on them with 4 overs one for 10. Alex Chilton (U13) again pitched in with two wickets, but the bowling honours went to Dan Longreatrix(U14) who took 3 for 14 including two out of three stumpings for Martin Boyle, who looked very good standing up.

Just as we thought it was over Netherton's No.7, Ali started to cause mayhem and hit one six clean over the road.He quickly got to 18 but luckily was a headless chicken with his running and Laney ran him out with a boundary throw.

On a cold evening our fielding had been pretty good and again proved the benefit of regular practice.Netherton finished just short on 98 for 8 in what had been a very entertaining game played in excellent spirit.

With the bulk of our U15 strongest players unavailable I was really pleased with all the team. The remaining U15's stepped up to the mark and took their chance and the younger players looked easily good enough to compete at this higher level. Very encouraging indeed.
