U13 games in last 7 days
By Andy Handley - June 13 2007
The U13’s have finally got their season underway playing 3 games in the last week. Here is a report on how they faired in the cup, the league and the 'pairs' league. >
The first match was the 2nd round of the national knockout away at Lichfield. Captain Brookes lost the toss and we were asked to bat, and were soon 1 down as Brookesy missed one that shot along the floor. Windy joined James Vernon at the crease, but the positive start asked for was not forthcoming as we limped to 7 for 1 off 6 overs, but the introduction of Lichfield’s change bowlers released the shackles and we were off and running.
Vern departed for 26, but Jack Harry came in and maintained the momentum, eventually having to retire for 30. TC belted a quick 15 and we eventually finished on 108 for 4.
Todd Quiney promptly took 2 wickets in his first 3 balls to put Lichfield on the back foot from which they never recovered. Excellent bowling and fielding kept up the pressure and our opponents closed on 38 for 9. The next round is away at Wolverhampton on Friday 22nd.

Our next fixture was a pairs game against Combswood on Sunday 10th. We are using the pairs to give games to lads not playing regularly in the 11-a-side team, but the 3 debutants, Danny Robinson, Jack Beedle and Danny Sadler all contributed to a 19 run win. The lack of a scorecard and the 10:00 start means that some of the details are a bit sketchy, but we batted first and again played very positive cricket. All the lads looked to score at every opportunity and despite losing about 5 wickets (at 8 runs a piece) we still ran up a net score of 261.
The instructions for Combswood’s reply were not to bowl any wides and keep up the standard of fielding shown against Lichfield. Stars of the bowling attack were Captain Jack Harry who bowled a quick and hostile 3 overs and took 3 wickets, and TC who also picked up 3 wickets with his so called ‘off cutters’. Combswood finished on 242 to leave us comfortable winners.

Last night we played our first 11-a-side league game, against Swindon. Mikey Brookes won the toss and elected to bowl, but when Swindon were 32 for 0 off the first 4 overs he was regretting his decision. Slowly but surely we started to get our act together, tight overs from Mikey and Todd started to put the brakes on, and when Robbie Mills took a superb caught and bowled to get rid of their opener for 26 we were starting to look like a team again. Millsy took another wicket, coupled with 2 from James Whitehouse and an excellent run out from Windy left Swindon on 101 for 6 after their 20 overs. At change of innings the Swindon manager complimented the boys on the standard of our fielding, he reckoned it was the best display he had seen at this level for a long time, which was testament to the work we have doing in training since the start of the season.
Because of our strong and deep batting line up the instructions were again for a positive start. TC went out and did just that, he was caught on the boundary off the first ball of the 4th over with 27 to his name (26 of them in boundaries). We were now well in front of the rate so Vern and Mikey kept the board ticking over at 5 an over and kept us in total control. One of the features of their partnership of 57 was the fact that they picked up virtually every single on offer, again something we have worked on in training.
Vern eventually retired on 32, and Mikey carried his bat for 26 not out, we reached our target in the 17th over for the loss of only 2 wickets.

In summary, it is nice to eventually get our season off and running, all the hard work the lads put in at winter nets and on Friday nights since the start of the season is beginning to pay off. We have a big squad of 16 players, so competition for places in the 11-a-side team is fierce. A good proportion of the side are also benefiting from playing senior cricket at weekends, so as the administrator of the web site says from time to time ‘The future is bright ………….’

Fantastic to read Tigga, especially kids that actually seem to be keen on the fielding aspect. Love your work.
