It’s becoming a little familiar now, fail to win the toss, get asked to bat, fail to score many runs and end up loosing to a team that we should have beaten out of sight ….
Not that I’m having a grumble, but that bloody pitch would even test Lara when he’s in the zone! Still, we all know what it does, and should manage to post a three figure score.
Not the greatest start as you may have guessed, two down pretty quickly, Russo not troubling the scorers and Simon departing soon after. Malc and Edger then proceeded to steady the ship, with some nice shots, coupled with the occasional play and miss. Malc even managed to get peppered with a couple of bouncers exploding from the surface off a good length. When I mention that the bowler in question was last clocked by Sky’s speed gun at approx: 27.4mph, it should give an indication of the quality of the pitch.
Edger and Malc soon departed and it was left to Ditchy and yours truly to face the music. Ditchy made 10, before he was undone LBW, by the shooter from back of a length. The previous ball had actually pitched in the same spot and hit his gloves at chest height! By combining a few scampered singles with some lusty blows Windows and myself managed to push the score to 85 for 5, with plenty of overs still left. It was pretty much down hill all the way from this point, as we collapsed to 94 all out, a combination of poor shots and unplayable deliveries (more to do with the pitch than the bowlers).
Out to field with a belief that although not a massive score, we could still bowl Penn out and win the game.
It started well Scotty (brittle back) and Hilly claiming a couple of quick wickets. It could have been more but balls just didn’t go to hand. Ditchy then replaced Scott and got another breakthrough to reduce them to 30 odd for 3.
Remember Uncle Buck? His son plays for Penn, and batted very well I may add, pushing the score up to 70 odd without further loss. Yours truly was then introduced into the attack (replacing Hilly from bottom end) and claimed a couple of wickets, whilst the returning powder, replacing Jordan from the top end, picked up another. 80 odd for six, and by the look of it, not too much more to come. However, it proved too little too late as they managed to nudge and fudge their way past our total in 42 overs.
I honestly think another 25 runs would have made the difference. We bowled and fielded well, especially WSW at cover. It’s gutting to know that we have lost two games we should have won. We need to put things right starting next week.
