Cup competitions

FA Cup

City made light work of an extra preliminary round fixture at the home of Brandon United, scoring five goals and keeping a clean sheet into the bargain; Keith Graydon’s two goals hallmarked the class player he is on his day.
It took a Richard Smith header in added-on time to salvage a 2-2draw against a well-organized Silsden at Eppleton, but City returned from the midweek replay with a 3-0 victory and a home tie against Guiseley in the first qualifying round (at Washington).
This was as far as City got in the competition as careless defending cost two early goals, and the ultimate defeat was City’s first of the season in all matches.

Northern League Cup

City exited the competition in their first match, soundly beaten at home by South Shields, whose want-to-win team effort shamed City’s team of skilled individuals.

FA Vase

City triumphed 6-2 at Crook Town in the second qualifying round, six different players finding the back of the net.
Five extra-time goals against a Sunderland Nissan side who ended the match with eight men after the referee had seen fit to brandish three red cards gave City an unsatisfactory but nevertheless welcome victory.
In a second round home tie against Consett City’s loss of form and confidence handed the visitors a convincing 4-0 victory, Mattie Moffat grabbing a hat-trick.

Durham Challenge Cup

Bishop Auckland manager Peter Mulcaster resigned after his side were thumped at home 7-0 by the rampant Citizens, Tommy English notching a hat-trick.
An excellent away win against Hartlepool Reserves in the next round underlined City’s credentials as one of the season’s major forces in the Northern League.
The reward for their hard-fought win was a visit to Easington Colliery Welfare, where City ran out 6-1winners.
Home advantage against Spennymoor Town in the quarter final proved no advantage as City succumbed to a team who quite simply wanted to win the game more than City, Craig Bishop scoring the only goal on 16minutes.
