City’s home record hardly suggests the new playing surface gave them an advantage over their opponents; the improved return from away trips further confounds the issue.
A greater goal difference was largely down to Steven Richardson and Tommy English, a converted midfielder and a wide player respectively both by nature and inclination.
The absence of a central target man remains a flaw in City’s make-up.
Only the FA’s procrastinated proposals for a reconstituted Unibond behind the scenes matched City’s lack of consistency on the field of play, as a result of which Chorley and Clitheroe will not replace Consett and Chester-le-Street as venues for the new campaign.
What City did manage to achieve with alarming regularity was to lose matches in which they were seemingly well in control; lack of concentration for the full ninety minutes will never make a Championship-winning side despite the obvious individual talent at City’s disposal.
