Review of Season 2006-7

Cup Competitions

FA Cup

A Leon Ryan header was enough for City to return victorious from Hall Road Rangers, Simon Corbett helping to defend the slender lead for nearly half an hour with a broken arm.

City’s second payday was a 5-3 away win at Esh Winning, the Citizens’ goals (English 2, Fenwick, Campbell, Ryan) due reward for a blistering 20-minute first-half spell.

Stephen Harrison and Michael Fenwick netted as City beat Unibond Alsager Town 2-0 (at Spennymoor) before a 5-1 (Chilton 2, Graydon, English, Fenwick) triumph over Hallam (at Esh Winning) set up a third consecutive home match against Barrow (at Esh Winning), when an Alex Taylor goal on five minutes ended City’s hopes of a first round proper pairing.

FA Vase

City entered the competition at the Second Qualifying Round and needed extra time before a Leon Ryan header sealed the home victory over Seaham Red Star (at Esh Winning), after Craig Tate had cancelled out Keith Graydon’s opener five minutes before time.

Class and resilience paved the way for a First Round 1-3 victory at Ashington Town thanks to strikes by Richardson, Chilton and Dodds and a home tie against Sheffield (at Esh Winning), Neil Campbell scoring a back-post winner in the second half.

City bowed out of the competition with a disappointing home performance against Flixton ( at Eppleton), Richardson netting a late consolation goal in reply to the visitors’ four.

Arngrove Northern League Cup

A brace each from Tommy English and Steven Richardson earned City a convincing home win against Jarrow Roofing, but they succumbed to a 0-2 home reverse to Newcastle Benfield Bay Plastics after dominating the first half but failing to convert territorial advantage into goals.

Durham Challenge Cup

City exited the competition at the Preliminary Round, going down 3-2 away to Horden despite two goals from English.
