West started the brighter of the two sides, with a try coming within the first 5 minutes. A break from fly half Chris Martin from the centre of the field. He passed to new man Alec Barker who made a dash for the line. Barker was just stopped, unfortunately knocking the ball forward in the tackle giving Percy Park a scrum. Good West pressure forced Park to concede a penalty. A quick tap and go and Garse was in the corner, with Mossy converting from the far left.
Some pressure from Park on West’s line after the try was defended comfortably. Not long after this saw another West Break from the Centre of the pitch. Garse fed by Greensmith charged at a gap in the back line. He stepped inside to feed Moss who floated a pass wide to Cheslin who attacked the Percy Park winger. A lovely step inside from Cheslin sucked in the opposition, then released full back Martin Boatman looping round to gallop home from the 22, Moss Converted.
From the kick off, Percy Park once more pressured the West line, which again showed great defence by the Stags.
Play moved to the centre of the field, where both sides kept position for short periods of time, also witnessing some good tackling.
From here West began to slowly move up the pitch, with Greensmith feeding the ball to oncoming forwards, making short breaks up the field. After resolute defence from the young Percy Park side they conceded a penalty. This was taken quickly, and spun to the backs who then charged for the line. 2 phases of forward play followed before James Greensmith picked up the ball from the back of a ruck, went blind and squeezed over the line for his first try for the Stags. Mossy again added the additional 2 points, making it 21-0 to West.
An additional 5 points was added to the West score just before the interval. A break up the field by Cheslin was closed down from the Park defence. This was tidied up by Toddy and Greensmith, who span a pass out to Chris Martin who broke the Percy Park back line and carried West down the centre of the field, popped the ball inside to Mossy, who was on his shoulder to score just to the left of the posts. He then took the conversion himself to take the Stags into a 29-0 lead at half time.
West made some changes going into the second half. Wallis, Miller and Danny Boatman came on to replace Chris Martin, Garse and Ryan Phillips.
After never laying down and dieing in the first half, Park continued their battling spirit going into the second period. They started the half strong, again with some good early pressure. Due to some sloppy passing and good defence by West, Park were kept away from the line.
West again stepped up the tempo, taking the ball up the field once more. A break from Cheslin 5 minutes into the second half nearly saw West get onto the score-sheet again, however a great tackle from the Percy Park defence halted West in their tracks, Park cleared their lines.
After this, more pressure from Percy Park again saw poor handling spoil their chance of clawing back the 29 point deficit. Gilly at this point came off to be replace by Tim Sawyer.
Later into the half West found themselves on the edge of the Park 22 with a scrum. The ball was spun out to the backs, which saw a nice move with Baker running a good line, breaking through the defence. This led to 2 phases of forward play taking the Stags to within centimetres of the line. The ball was fed left to the backs. With Park out numbered West attacked the line, Moss deciding to take the ball himself to only just score, this was however unconverted.
Park came firing back on all cylinders. Having possession for long period of time after the restart, they began to venture into the West 22. It all started from great play from in their own half, with a mixture of forward play and backs running. They stormed into the West 22, spreading the ball wide for the full back to score. This was nothing more than what Percy Park deserved after their battling performance throughout the game.
Into the last 5 minutes, West again began to pressure the Percy Park line again. This pressure was held out for long period by a resilient Park effort, Greensmith then fed Chummers who made a fabulous ‘54 yard’ dash to the line to score under the posts. Mossy slotting over the conversion gave West a 41-5 lead.
Even though the game was into latter stages, Park did not give up, and again their efforts paid dividends by getting the final try.
From just infront of West’s 22, the Park scrum half executed a perfect chip over the top of the ruck, for the full back to run onto from blindside. He caught the ball from the chip to finish off a wonderful score. The resulting conversion was nailed, to finish the game at 41-12.
Overall a good performance today from the Stags. Both coaches Sammy Hutton and Gary Miller must have been pleased with a well drilled performance.
Credit must go to Percy Parks young side, who battled all day giving us a entertaining game to watch.
