Weekend Preview

By Dave Picken - February 28 2020
Weekend Preview Storm Jorge is on the way and could prevent the basement battle in North One East from taking place at Laund Hill this weekend. There should be no such problem at Brinkburn where the Stags are due to take on Durham City in the County Cup quarter final  (kick off 2.15).

Huddersfield YMCA were in touch during the week to say their pitch could not take much more water. With a yellow weather warning for rain today and tomorrow there will be a pitch inspection tonight and, if necessary, a second inspection first thing Saturday.

YM are, of course, already relegated thanks to a stiff 33 point deduction because their parent organisation went into administration. With that on their backs they've struggled to win games having only succeeded once so far - a home defeat  of Percy Park who pulled off that bizarre win at Brinkburn last time out.

After holding our visitors, and Storm Dennis, to just a 7-0 lead at the break we fell to bits in the second half conceding no less than 36 points with the gale at our backs.

Park gave us a lesson in how to play into the elements and that may come in handy if this week's game goes ahead.

There will be the usual enforced changes with Matt Siddle , Danny Cookland and Ollie Connolly unable to travel.

Lewis Scott moves to full back with Zac Southern at fly half and Owen Westhorp coming in on the wing for his second fist team start- he was very unlucky to be robbed of a try on his debut at Cleckheaton when the ref missed some blatant shirt pulling.

In the pack  Jake Linighan has had a good rest and is available again as is Adam Brown. Michael Hogan has had a nightmare two years with a knee injury but is now fit to take his place in the front row alongside Liam Pennick and Andrew Rollins.

Sadly, Liam Bailey is still badly injured following the double knee drop on his thigh as he scored the final try at Scarborough. He's had to seek hospital treatment for a very painful swelling.

Firsts: Lewis Scott, Owen Westhorp, Will Hilditch, Harry Mayes, Max Tennant, Zac Southern, Ryan Painter (capt), Liam Pennick, Andrew Rollins, Michael Hogan, Jake Linighan, James Borthwick, Adam Brown, Ben Armstrong, Carl Miller.

Changes: Joe Rafferty, Ethan Ledington, Alex Barker

Stags squad: Geritz, Cookland, Hutchinson, Dixon, Caswell, Bulmer, Simpson, Tyers, Lindridge, Larkin, McLurg, Thomas, Quinn, Connolly, Cameron, Todd, Moss, Johnston, J Painter, Harrison.
