West 12 Percy Park 43

West 12 Percy Park 43 At half time it looked like all we would have to do was return to the pitch and let Storm Dennis sweep us to victory. The hard work looked to have been done as the lads  defended heroically to restict Percy Park to just one try  with the gale at their backs ....

 Mary Baggs one minute silence

A one minute silence was observed before the game in memory of Mary Baggs and Chris Atkins' grandfather Len.

However, in an amazing turnaround Park came out in the second half and managed to score six tries into the teeth of the storm while we could only manage two.

That first half try came after just seven minutes courtesy of right winger Matt Boustead who was able to run in behind the posts after Ash Smith broke through the West defence.

We lost the hardworking Chris Atkins to an eye injury on the quarter hour,  but despite only managing to get in the Percy Park half a handful of times, mounted some heroic defence to keep the visitors out.

If we were confident of using the elements to our advantage after the break we were soon disillusioned.

Park stuffed the ball up their jumpers and stretched their lead with No 8 Sean Williamson forcing his way over from close range.

We came back but were made to pay when a floated pass from Painter to Connolly on the Park 22  was caught by the gale  - centre Ali Blair swooing on the loose ball to race all the way upfield to give his side a 19-0 lead.

The blow was one we were never to recover from as first up tackling became almost non-existent allowing Park to get across the gain line at will.

They scored their fourth  try to gain a bonus point with some ease as hooker Johnny Dubois raced in unchallenged from 15 metres - setting up an easy conversion for Smith.

Danny Cookland was yellow carded for backchat but that was the cue for his side to finally get on the scoreboard –Lews Scott intercepting 25 metres out and having a simple run-in.

Southern’s conversion was wide and any hopes we had of fighting back were dashed just three minutes later.

Again it was missed tackles on No. 8 Williamson which set the visitors on the front foot. The ball was moved quickly wide where Boustead was able to slide in for his second try of the afternoon.

Our heads were well and truly down, and despite huffing and puffing in the Park half, it was little surprise when the visitors got their sixth of the afternoon.

It came as we lost the ball as we attacked on the right in the Park half with centre Seb Reece this time  gathering and racing in untouched from his own half.

Park weren’t finished and again took advantage of a series of half-hearted tackles as they moved the ball to the left with Smith having the easiest of finishes -his conversion taking his side to a 43-5 lead.

There was time for a late consolation for a thoroughly dispirited home side with Matt Siddle crashing over after skipper Painter took a quick tap penalty close to the Park line.

We now have a fortnight to gird our loins before travelling to bottom club Huddersfield YMCA.
