Day Out In Scarborough

By Dave Picken - February 6 2020
Day Out In Scarborough Another tough game in prospect this week as we make our first league visit to Scarborough looking for our first away win of the season ..

We are unbeaten at home in 2020 thanks to victories over Malton and Norton and last week's thrilling 20-19 win against second top Cleckheaton.

And even Bradford and Bingley admit we didn't get the rub of the green in the 20-12 defeat at Wagon Lane where several tricky decisions over "held-up" tries didn't go our way.

We will be hoping for better luck on the road when we  take on a Scarborough side who won 29-25 at Brinkburn back in October when they were flying high in the league.

But, as we've discovered, losing players to injury takes some time to overcome and the Seasiders have lost seven of their last eight games - slumping to eighth  place in the process.

Our own rebuilding is starting to show some success with 28 out training during the week,  however a couple of the  youngsters who have come in and done so well will be missing this week.

Prop Liam Pennick and second row James Borthwick are stopping behind to see Will Corbett off  in style before he joins the the Royal Engineers. Will resumed playing rugby this season after becoming one of the leading cyclists in the North with the Ribble team. He is, of course, Fred's grandson, Barry's son and Jay's brother.

Ben Armstrong and Chris Atkins are also both unavailable this week. Both have had tremendous seasons so far but fortunately, Liam Bailey and centre Lewis Scott are available again this week and there's a welcome return fopr Danny Cookland and Joe Rafferty.

Danny has recovered from his broken wrist while Joe is now back in training after taking a break to get married. He will be on the bench alongside Carl Miller.

West: Matt Siddle, Will Hilditch, Lewis Scott, Zac Southern, Max Tennant, Ollie Connolly, Ryan Painter (capt), Andrew Rollins, Aidan Jackson-Smith, Adam Coates, Jake Linighan,  Danny Cookland,Alex Barker, Liam Bailey, Adam Brown.

Changes: Joe Rafferty, Harry Mayes, Carl Miller.

The Stags are off to Barney buoyed by some much better performances and with lots out training this week.

Second row Brendan Bulmer and prop Charlie Caswell are among those impressing the coaches with the tall Bulmer already getting some game time with the Firsts at Bradford and Bingley.

Despite so many of the younger players off to Corbett's leaving do there's still a big squad: Hadwen, Hutchinson, Wood, Mould, J Tyers, B. Bulmer, Mclurg, Larkin, Thomas, Quinn, Cameron, Todd, Moss, Jamieson, J  Painter, Harrison, Smith, Moran, N.Bulmer, M Tyers, Lindridge.

The weekend's  big game is on Sunday when the Under 16's are in the County Cup final at Billingham against old rivals Blaydon.

It will be on the artificial pitch kick off 2.30.
