West 10 York 22

By El Pedro - November 24 2019
West 10 York 22 In what is becoming a familiar story we again come away with nothing from game in which we had chances after starting slowly.

In the previous two games at Moortown and Kendal we went down by 14 and 11 points respectively and that similar two-score margin was on the scoreboard after 80 minutes again. Promotion chasing York will probably feel they should have been more comfortable winners but we battled hard to stay in the game and trailing 10-17 in the second half had good chances to level the game up. But ultimately our fate was sealed when we couldn’t add any points and minutes later conceded at the other end.

York were 10 points up inside 7 minutes with their first try coming before we had even touched the ball. The visitors kicked off and claimed the ball uncontested in the air before moving upfield for a couple of phases and scoring in the right corner through Will Fordy.

Our dismal opening only got worse when John Bunter was forced from the field with a leg injury moments before winger Rob Hodges ran in for another easy York try. Liam Hessay missed both conversions.

We eventually established ourselves in the game and a typical charge from Peter Youll moved play into the 22 and when York infringed at the ruck, Stu Waites slotted over the penalty to open our account. Hessay missed the chance to reopen the lead for the visitors before we enjoyed our best spell of the match in the closing minutes of the half. Camped in the 22 we won penalty after penalty and eventually Liam Bailey was able to twist his way over the line just to the left of the posts. Waites conversion levelled things up at 10-10 as the teams changed ends.

Unfortunately the tied score would last about as long in the second half as it did in the first. Barely a minute was on the clock when Sam Elliott finished off an overlap on the right with Hessay converting.

Although we struggled to win clean ball at the lineout, when we did the rolling maul was proving effective and a rumbling effort was rewarded when York second-row Chris Fox was yellow-carded for coming in from the side. We looked to take full advantage by kicking to the corner and although we kept up the pressure for several minutes the score wouldn’t come and when the ball was moved out into the backline it went loose and York could clear. Although only midway through the half it would prove to be a crucial missed opportunity.

Liam Bailey joined Fox in the sin-bin after a successive penalties and with just over an hour gone and the visitors returned to the full complement they scored their fourth try from close range - effectively sealing the game.

We still went in search of the losing bonus point and looked to have it when Ryan Painter dove for the line only for referee Simon Williams to be unsighted and award a knock-on and bring a slightly premature end to the game.

It was certainly true that York could well have won by more - they missed 12 points in shots at goal and twice kicked the ball dead when aiming for the corner - but our ability to stay in the game is admirable - we just need to keep that little bit closer on the scoreboard.

A week off next week should hopefully allow some injuries to heal before the trip to Durham City and visit of Driffield in December.

Can't fault the effort but we now have a fortnight to get some of the basics right (kick-offs notwithstanding) so I hope we get numbers out in training as that is where things will be put right as WPA will tell you.
What news on Bunter?
