Cleckheaton 59 West 15

By Dave Picken - October 6 2019
Cleckheaton 59 West 15 A perfect storm of injuries, work committments and stag do's provided a nightmare week for our coaches who only managed to pull a side together late on Friday.

The lads who answered the club's call included 18 year old Aidan Jackson-Smith making his first start at hooker, 17-year-old Owen Westhorp making his debut on the wing, Stu Waites having to resort to his schoolboy position of scrum half, winger Jo Willis coming in at centre, Carl Miller coming out of retirement (he wanted 10 minutes action but got 70) and Connor McLurg making his first start for some time and earning the man of the match plaudit. He admits he should now start training again.

On the bench Cameron Mould came off his 6.00 a.m. shift on the Fish Quay to make his first appearance alongside Callum Johnston and Miller. They all got plenty of game time with nasty looking injuires to John Bunter (elbow), Danny Cookland (wrist) and Chris Atkins (ankle). Although a grimacing  Bunter did manage to return when Atkins limped off.

Unfiortunately, they came up against easily the best side we have faced so far with power and experience across the pitch.

The pattern was set from the kick-off with West gaining good territory, but then conceding a penalty which allowed Cleckheaton to force their way upfield with Depledge going in at the corner.

Two minutes later they were 14-0 with flanker Joey Carley going in at the opposite corner.

We then enjoyed our best spell of pressure after Zac Southern, playing at fly half, made a break into the 22. The West forwards forced a series of penalties with Stu Waites,  finally deciding to take the three points.

Cleck weathered the storm and Depledge looked to be in again only for a tremendous covering tackle from the speedy Westhorp to stop him in his tracks on the line and preventing  him from grounding the ball.

Unfortunately for us,  Cleckheaton scored from the five-metre scrum with Dale Breakwell going in under the posts.

The bonus point try came on the half hour through Jack Marshall before Breakwell crossed for his second try to give his side a 33-3 lead the break.

We failed to take the restart and Cleckheaton once again punished the mistake with Marshall again speeding clear to score followed by another from Hayward.

We continued to battle, and got the reward when Peter Youll burst through from the 22 to get his first try of the season.

We could have had another when Westhorp chased down his own long kick up the left wing. He was pulled back by the shirt as he went to collect just a couple of metres from the line but referee Dean Walker was unsighted.

Instead, the home side completed their scoring with a maul from a tap penalty with Thrower touching down.

There was still time for some well-deserved consolation with Stu Waites gliding through a gap to score in the final move of the game.

A drubbing, but the home supporters and officials were fulsome in their praise for the way the makeshift squad stuck at their task for the full 80 minutes.

It's Scarborough at home next Saturday and hopefully it will be an easier week for the coaches - although it promises to be a busy one for the physios.

5 games in and can't get a creditable team out - what happened to last season's 'strength in depth' claims ?

I’m sure the lads who played will appreciate that comment.... not! Also all need to remember that people play for enjoyment and not get paid so sometimes other things crop up and people can’t play
