Malton & Norton 34 West 24

By Dave Picken - September 22 2019
Malton & Norton 34 West 24 We raced into a 14 point lead at The Gannock and looked well set for our first away win of the season - unfortunately hosts Malton and Norton had other ideas.

The home side had a little more power and desire when it mattered eventually running in five tries while we had to settle for a try bonus point.

The first of those West tries came from the kick off courtesy of a knock on. From the scrum the ball was moved quickly to the left where full back Zac Southern squeezed in at the corner.

Waites was on the mark with his touchline kick, and he had an easier shot two minutes later after Jake Linighan finished off an attack started on the half way line by Alex Barker. Andrew Rollins taking the ball on into the 22 with Linighan in support to go over.

Malton and Norton came back with a penalty from stand off James Bulmer and then a slick move saw centre Vus Dyantes go in under the posts.

We then suffered a major blow when playmaker Stu Waites limped off with a knee injury – Southern moving to fly half with Luke Mallinson coming on at full back.

The home side took a one point the lead ten minutes later - back row Tom Lowry finishing off a catch and drive.

But wet came back with ourr third of the afternoon. Southern once again going over in the left corner after looping round to take a pass from winger Lewis Scott and give his side a four point lead.

It was nip and tuck at this stage and Malton took their turn to edge ahead- full back Ali Fothergill powering over with Bulmer’s conversion giving his side a 22-19 lead at the break.

With the wind and slope behind them Malton started the second half strongly forcing several penalties in the West 22, which saw flanker Liam Bailey yellow carded.

The home forwards seized their opportunity as they opted for a scrum with Fothergill again using his strength from close range and Bulmer converting.

Wet were struggling to make inroads into the home defence, despite the best efforts of ball carrier John Bunter,  but we did get a lucky break to grab a try bonus point.

Southern’s pass to Will Hilditch was out of reach but the West centre stuck out a boot to hack the ball into the path of Max Tennant. The bounce eluded the winger but the ball spun back into the path of Hilditch who grabbed it to dive over to take the score to 29-24.

We did have a spell of pressure - relieved only when replacement prop Liam Pennington was penalised for hauling an opponent out of the side of maul. Malton promptly going back down the slope and sealing the game with centre Will Bell forcing his way over after a five metre scrum.
