Play Off Preview

By Dave Picken - April 25 2019
Play Off Preview Brinkburn hosts its first ever play-off game this Saturday (kick off 3.00) as we look to bounce back to North One at the first attempt. Heath from Halifax, runners-up in Yorkshire One, stand in our way but we do have home advantage because we have more league wins ...

It’s a game which sees the visitors arrive in their highest ever league position.

It's the opposite for us, but the "cup final" excitement of a play-off is something to be enjoyed, and we are delighted to have a second bite at promotion.

Durham City's ability to beat their closest opponents courtesy of last second kicks (four times!) meant it was a shoot-out between ourselves and Northern for the second place.

Fortunately, South Shields Westoe made Northern blink first - typically they have been in touch from McCracken Park to wish us all the very best in the play-off.

Heath, formed from Heath Grammar School  Old Boys, have had an upsurge in fortunes since winning the 2002 Powergen Junior Vase at Twickenham, the Yorkshire Silver Trophy and promotion to Yorkshire Division 2 as Champions in the same year.

They'll face a West side which will sadly be without winger Adam Peacock,- pictured along with dad Les while scoring at Novos last time out, and Joe Rafferty who strained a calf in the same sesssion.

"Chez" was injured in a clash of heads at training last night and went straight to James Cook hospital where he has an appointment with a plastic surgeon. Best wishes from everyone.

Hopefully he can make it to the game as a spectator where we will be boosted by the return of top try scorer Will Hilditch and the versatile Luke Mallinson.

Skipper Ryan Painter and brother Gavin will again miss out - the former thanks to a sending off at City and Gav to a long-term knee injury.

As a result, Matt Siddle returns again from darkest Essex to continue at scrum half alongside player-coach Stu Waites.

Our new centre combination of Peter Youll and Davy Heckles has been a feature of the second half of the season with Heckles averaging more than a try a game since his return from Horden and Peterlee.

However, the big battle is likely be up front where Heath have gained a reputation for close range tries. However, so is Jake Linghan who broke his duck at City and who has scored in every game since.

He'll start alongside Chris Atkins with Jay Corbett fit again to start at No 8 alongside Scott Butcher and Alex Barker.

The play-off allows for four replacements  with nine interchanges.

West: Zac Southern, Will Hilditch, Davy Heckles,  Peter Youll, Max Tennant,  Stu Waites (captain), Matt Siddle, Adam Coates, Andrew Rollins, Adam Brown,  Jake Linighan, Chris Atkins, Alex Barker, Scott Butcher, Jay Corbett.

Changes: John Bunter, Luke Mallinson, Isaac Robinson, Michael Hogan

Stand Fast Boys - No Surrender !

Master Race Update - Chez did get back home last night in the end but back at James Cook today as DP says. Good news is that the Consultant has said that although his eye brow is split and needs some work, it's colour will NOT repeat NOT be affected once the Iodine wears off - The Master Race prevails once again.

Thank you DP and all of our good friends at WHRFC for their messages etc..

A strong and disciplined performance will be required. This game won't be easy. Heath are there on merit. Leave nowt on the pitch. We can do this
GO WEST!

I agree with Old Shepherd.
Strength and discipline are required in these big games as will proper game manangement of the squad. It's not always about who starts games but who finishes.
