West 53 Gateshead 12

West 53 Gateshead 12 A comfortable home win over Gateshead coupled with a Northern loss sees us back into the promotion play-off spot with just one game left to play.

We went into this game knowing we had to win to keep our hopes of a top two finish alive and then hope an in-form Westoe could beat Northern at McCracken Park. The South Shields side did their bit for us with a 34-24 win and set us up for a trip to Novocastrians on Saturday where a win of any kind will see us into a promotion play-off with Halifax-based side Heath.

Elsewhere, Durham City all but mathematically sealed the title with a big win at Stockton so it only remains for second place to be finalised on the last day of the season. Thanks to our superior number of games won we are ahead on the tie-breaker should it come to that so the equation is pretty simple - if we win the result of Northern’s trip to Rovers will be immaterial.

Missing our top two try scorers to suspension and injury we may have expected a slow start against Gateshead but the opposite was true. Pace, power and good ball retention saw us go two tries up inside 10 minutes. Adam Peacock touched down for the first in the right corner before being involved in the build-up to the second that was finished by a strong-running Jay Corbett.

The ball carrying of the forwards, with Corbett and Jake Linighan to the fore, was causing Gateshead lots of problems and it was another bruising run from Corbett which set up a strong position in the 22 which led to Michael Hogan crashing over for our third try.

Having featured prominently in the loose, Linighan then scored one of his own in tight play, emerging from the bottom of a rolling maul to secure the bonus point score with only 25 minutes played.

Bonus point scored we lost focus a little and the ball retention which had been such a feature early in the game deserted us. Gateshead built pressure through sustained possession and were rewarded with a score from second row Scott Wilczek on the stroke of half-time.

With news filtering through of Westoe being well ahead at Northern you may have expected a focusing of the minds at half-time but the form shown late in the first-half continued in the second with the ball being coughed up too easily, too often. Aside from a Davy Heckles try on 54 minutes we struggled to string together enough sustained possession to score more points.

Eventually, as the game entered the final 10 minutes, we re-discovered our early form and with Gateshead also tiring we were able to run in four more tries. Luke Mallinson went over from a quick tap penalty and then more strong running from Linighan and Corbett set up Isaac Robinson for a score.

A loose pass as we tried to move the ball wide on our own 22 was hacked through by Gateshead centre David Tate and he beat Max Tennant to the ball for a consolation try but Tennant would have the last laugh with two tries in the last two minutes. The young winger popped up in midfield for his first, storming through a big gap to score under the posts but saved the best till last with a classy finish - cutting inside his opposite number and rounding the final defender for a super winger’s try.

After coming out on the losing side of a big game at Durham City last week we have been given another lifeline and the trip to Novos now takes on even more significance than before.

Yes - the report says it all really. Some great play from our lads yesterday, good set piece, more aggressive at the breakdown than we have been meaning quicker ball and some deadly/battering runs from our two centres resulting in a handful of tries for our flying wingers - great to watch. (I've noticed that Max is also developing a nice reddish tint lately when the sun is at the correct angle.)

All that together with the "Souter Fiver" ensured a great result.

Well done to everyone 😀

Great photos too Kathryn - Thank You 😉

Excellent result considering our two top scorers were missing.
Forget any play-off game. Novos will be keen to do a "Westoe" on us and spoil the party so let's get everyone out at training and focus on this Saturday and nothing else.

Good point PU ... we’ve been given a reprieve few people expected. We can’t afford to throw the chance away.
Hopefully we won’t waste possession as much as we did against Gateshead, when our ball retention in the tackle was worryingly poor at times.

Fair point about ball retention actually - it will be better on Sat though - all will be well and both the Disco Bus and Brinkburn will be bouncing 😏
