Boxing Day Squad

By Dave Picken - December 21 2018
Boxing Day Squad Momentum is the name of the game for both and West and Rovers as the old rivals meet once again on Boxing Day - Brinkburn kick off 2.00 .

The sides have already met at Brinkburn in the league back in sultry September when West won 27-12  -  earning a bonus point thanks to two tries from top scorer Will Hilditch, Gavin Painter and player coach Stu Waites.

Gav will be missing this week, after taking a knock in the closing stages against Westoe last week, but brother Ryan Painter will be on duty as skipper.

He’ll lead a strong West side with the coaches resisting the temptation to field a young side to save more experienced players for the return league fixture at the New Friarage just ten days later.

It is the only first team game in the middle of a three week break from the league with both sets of coaches conscious of the need for players to maintain their match fitness and sharpness.

With West in joint second place in the league, and fighting for the automatic promotion place, the league game will be an important one. Rovers also come into the game in some form having won two of their last three games which has moved them into a comfortable eight place in the league.

More than the usual number of replacements are allowed for the holiday game so we are taking the opportunity of giving Michael Hogan (pictured) his first game in over a year.  The second row turned prop has had a long rehabilitation from knee surgery.
