Heughers Retain Bowden Trophy Rovers' Heughers retained the Bill Bowden Memorial trophy after a hard fought 22-15 win at Brinkburn with the Bowden family on hand to present the trophy ..
Bowden Thorn

The pitch was in remarkably good nick considering the frost and snow of the previous day.

And, despite the conditions, the game once again attracted a big crowd with no shortage of players from from both clubs keen to take part

That included Jonny Boatman, Martin Todd, Rob Thorn and Luke Chapman for West - the latter distinguishing himself with a yellow card for a late hit just three seconds after he came on at at the start of the second half.

The Heughers had taken an early lead with Rob Thorn (left) getting one back for the Stags in typical style.

Bowden Foulds

The Heughers came back and were 19-5 up at half time. However, they were down to 14 men after one of their wingers fell out with Jordan Foulds.

"Mad Dog" got himself on the scoresheet (left) in the second half as the Stags battled away.

However, lack of control close to the line was to let them down on more than one occasion as the Heughers refused to let the trophy slip out of their hands

Bowden Callum Johnston Callum Johnston provided brief hope that the Stags may at least draw level when he finished off in the corner, but the 14 men were able to hold out quite comfortably for a deserved win.

A nice summary of an important game played in awful conditions.

Fantastic to see some of Bill's Family at Brinkburn- a lovely man, blessed with character, humour and great medical skills.

He put me back together on many occasions at St Hilda's & HGH as I am sure he did with many others.

Sadly missed - fondly remembered.
