Mix And Match

By Dave Picken - August 27 2017
Mix And Match With so many regular first teamers away we were still able to field two competitive sides against Stockton and Thirsk but failed to win either game. Stockton won 36-12 and Thirsk by 31-29 ...

The call to travel to Stockton was a late one after Sedgefield dropped out of their trip to the impressive new Grangefield pitches.

It gave Liam Austwicke a chance for his first run out for West and he looked quality at full back. He was joined in that team by regular first teamers in Southern and Mallinson in the backs with Barker and Bunter in the pack. "Crazy Craig" Hadwen coming on for his first team debut at the age of 35.

Alex Key continued to stake his place for a front row slot and once again Matt Siddle provided an all action peformance. They came up against a hard working home team bolstered by the return of Steve Jones - former Falcons and Scotland A - who orchestrated the show from inside centre.

The slick home backs ran in some great tries and will be a force in D&N1. However, it was CeeJay Beales who got the best try of the afternoon collecting wide on the right on the half way line and ending up running through the opposition to touchdown close to the posts

Youll Thirsk

At Brinkburn (left)  Peter Youll, Andrew Rollins and Will Hilditch all started in an entertaining game with Pete back in his former position of fly half and Rollins at No 8.

That may have been because Sam Miller strained knee ligaments last week and is a doubt for the league opener against Huddersfield YMCA.
