Alnwick Preview

By Dave Picken - March 10 2017
Alnwick Preview Only two home games to go and they're both tough ones. First up are Alnwick who arrive for a 2.00  kick off on the back of an attritional game in the mud against leaders Pocklington last week ..

Pock's defence triumphed 7-3 in the end and they, of course, are our final visitors on April Fool's Day.

We will go into the game after a three week lay-off. Our last game being a  home win over another promotion challenger in Penrith -  that was way back on February 18th .

Unfortunately, last week's game at Durham City was a victim of the weather with the University apparently influencing the decision as they had a game sceheduled for midweek. League rules say an alternative venue should be sought in the event of an unplayable pitch - sadly that proved impossible hence the game taking place next Saturday instead.

The coaches had pretty a much full strength squad lined up for the trip to Hollow Drift  but, as ever, there's changes this week notably at scrum half where Ryan Painter has had a late call up for the Calcutta Cup game where he'll no doubt be making his presence felt in the Travis Perkins hospitality box.

Matt Siddle once again steps into the breech after an excellent first  season in senior rugby.

Top try scorer Liam Checksfield makes his first appearance of 2017, after breaking his hand playing for Falcons Academy, with Peter Youll and Luke Mallinson on the wings.

Games between West and Alnwick are traditionally close encounters with the home side tending to triumph. True to form Alnwick won the first game 18-9 back in November  - our first defeat of the season.

Full back James Bird was  the dangerman popping up two minutes from time to score the decisive try and then converting it from way out on the touchline to deny us a losing bonus point.

West: Zac Southern, Luke Mallinson, Liam Checksfield, Greg Edwards, Peter Youll,  Gavin Painter, Matt Siddle, , Anth Carr, Andrew Rollins, Adam Coates,  John Bunter, Carl Miller, Dan Boatman(captain), Lee Maddison, Sam Miller.

Changes: Ross Wood (fr), Joe Rafferty, Will Hilditch.
