City Preview

By Dave Picken - March 3 2017
City Preview Liam Checksfield and Aaron Myers return to the Firsts as we enter the final half dozen games of the season  eager to stay on the coattails of leaders Pocklington ...

We only have two out of the last six at home with City the first of the tricky away trips.

Our hosts started the season well only to lose their last five league games, while we have been winning for of ours and drew the other.

However, we've already faced each other twice with West winining both the Senior Cup and league games at Brinkburn -  but only by slender margins.

City's lack of form has seen them drop into the relegation places, and they will be equally desperate for the points on what promises to be a heavy pitch.

With the Stags also involved in a big game - a County Cup semi at Mowden - the coaches have had the tricky task of juggling squads to put out two strong sides.

As a result top try scorer Liam Checksfield makes an immediate return after breaking his hand playing for Newcastle Falcons Academy against Sale Sharks at New Year. Before then he had scored eleven tries - although Sam Miller is now close behind with ten of his own.

Aaron Myers also makes a rare start. He works away two weeks out of four but has been involved in training for the last fortnight, and his experience will  be a bonus, as will that of former skipper Anth Carr who will also start at Hollow Drift.

Peter Youll moves out wide to accommodate Checksfield's return, while Zac Southern returns to full back as Gav Painter resumes his playmaking duties at fly half.

Despite the demands of the Stags there's a strong bench heading for Hollow Drift -  Will Hilditch providing backs cover and Lee Maddison looking after the back row. Ross Wood has made more first team appearances than any other player so  far this season, and he'll be providing the front row cover.

City: Max Bailey, Garry Izomor, Craig Dominick, Chris Metcalfe, Tom Elliott, Paul Armstrong, Will Paxton, David Lyall, Kenny Reader, Fraser Kirkley, Kevin Showler, Benny Parkinson, Howard Johnson, Dan Holden, Peter Dent.Changes: Nick Howe, Tom Baty, Mike Hay
