The man in charge was ex-Rovers captain and West stand-off Gareth Foreman.
West received the ball from the opening whistle and went straight to work pushing the ball up field with some great charges from Mark Appleyard and the rest of the vertically challenged West forwards...after a tense 10 minutes or so the first points were on the board.
Jamie the Kiwi Connolly going over...surely he's in contention for an All Blacks vets call up if a side actually exists....more was to come from great running skills from the likes of Davey "side stepping" Tighe, Hartlepools number one wood magician Ste Jones - Connolly again taking advantage of his hovercraft running skills notched his brac
The Rovers side decided to tighten up and went on the offensive with some inch by inch driving play...great defensive work from the red white green forwards stopped the advance on the try line and signalled half time and half a satsuma....
One notable casualty from the first half was the man mountain Chummers..he was a casualty of friendly fire from his own side..what can only described as a Glasgow kiss from the ever dependable Mixie Parker - not only did we loose the family sized loose head but the backrow cover of Micky Hart who turned ambulance driver and took the unlucky Chummers to hospital.
Second half was again a game of who's got the ball in the dark!!! Yet more great breaks from the ziggy zaggy Tighe, now at fly half cos of the loss of Keith's younger brother Baggs, school teacher Chesh taking the reins at scrum half. With the inclusion of Matty "dead lift" Richardson the game saw a great piece of play...a little chip through which Henry Paul would be proud of saw the west winger go in in the corner.
With only 50p left on the flood light meter the game had a few more tries to go...one from a great bit of forwards play between Doxs who picked up at the base of a ruck and sped up the pitch to unload to the Josh Kronfeld esq lfc to go over...
With the smell of the chuck wagon ready to serve the bait Rovers ran in two uncontested tries to give the crowd a little cheer at the end of a great battle between two hard sides..yet again rugby the winner.
Some great performances to note.... the two lads from the north clavering borders Gilly and Benno, both putting in good shifts.. FC with a barn storming charge for the line only to be inches short, the story of his life!!!
Davy "no submarine will sink me" Tighe, Liam "chopper" Larkin for his ruthless tackling and everyone else for doing their bit. Finally some beer arrived in the changing room, no bottle opener tho!!!! A flask of tea and 5 cups between 25!!!
Great night had by all apart from Chummers and Miky who spent the rest of the night at A and E...
Heres to next time...up the Vets.
