Mowden Park IIIs 10 Stags 31

Mowden Park IIIs 10 Stags 31
In the shadow of the largest rugby stadium in England (Twickenham apart) the unbeaten West Stags travelled to DMP in a top of the CANDY 2 Clash.   With a number of unavailablities in the First Team which needed players to move up, the Stags thankfully could put together a more than competitive side. With Brown, Linighan, and Foulds off to the Wolds of Yorkshire we knew that the lads would need to step up to the mark.

Joe Raffertys breath was 100% proof, Crazy Craig drove past us as we were turning into the ground and so we were lucky to kick off with 15 bodies in the bright mid winter sunshine.

The first period of the game was chess like  with West coming closest, however some average lineout work kept us from scoring.

Conversely the scrum was excellent with the West front row dominating every set piece and putting massive pressure on the DMP outfit who were a good sized crew.

The backs were not running as smoothly as they usually do with some bad passing so it was a relief when just before the break Joe Willis snuck in at the corner after a decent set of simple hands. Mossy was just wide for the conversion.

At half time we had a bit of a refocus knowing that if we could get our basic phases going we could score......and that's what happened.

West caught the kick off, set up a ruck, picked and drew in some defenders and Quinn fed to Hadwen who ploughed over. Moss adding the extras. 12-0.

Instead of scoring next we were then on the wrong end of the refs whistle and we conceded a try and then another with DMP deservedly bringing themselves back into the game at 17-10.

West knew they had to take a stranglehold on the game with 25 minutes left as if DMP had scored next things may have been tricky.

Things clicked, the lineout start working like a Swiss time piece and the forwards picked and drove tying in the tiring DMP forwards. After a quick release of ball from a ruck the returning Matty Tyers flew in at the corner. Moss adding 2 more.

The next came from the reborn lineout and a drive into the corner with Nige 'everyone's favourite TV reality cop' Bulmer coming up from the bottom of the pile of bodies.

Matty Tyers got his brace with another in at the corner to compete the scoring.

A smashing win to take us to 15/15 this season - a wonderful effort from the players. We will need to double our efforts to finish the job we have started. There is no reason we can't.

Tries :- Willis, Hadwen, Tyers M (2) and TV's The Interceptor (he looks bigger on telly).

Club pedant here .... Wasps' Ricoh Arena is bigger. But I guess the answer is that it's a footy stadium as well.
Brill report and great performance.
